Fox and Coyote WIP 2
Yes, I'm still working ojn this one. I'm trying to work out the composition. I'm looking for suggestions on where the moon ought to go. Any ideas? I kinda like it behind the fox but I'm not sure it's a strong composition in that way. Maybe behind the cityscape? Once I decide on that I can rework the shadows and finish the background and the characters. Any other composition critique welcome.
The tree, moss, sidewalk and cityscape are still just an underpainting. Also the backs of both crittes aren't done yet as I was merely experimenting with fur techniques. If you want to critique the fur please look at the necks of both as that is the style that will be used.

phew, oversized. I had to dwonload it to be able to look at it in one piece...
for starters, the fox appears more to be sitting/laying on something than actually jumping off the fence. or maybe he does... sit on the moon, that is.
I have a feeling that the upper right corner looks empty. maybe a larger speck of light can help with that. maybe even put the moon up there or something.
coyotes eyebrow irritates me a bit; it looks too human, too stiff. if I recall right it should be more flexible. maybe you can convince a dog to pose for you?
I'm curious what the result will look like. very interesting, there must be a great story behind the scenery. :)

Thank you very much for taking the time to look close and comment ^_^
Sorry! I should resize it as I actually meant to post one easy to see on the screen *headdesk*
Yes, I left the coyotes face as is for now but I don't really like the eye...too zombie. I unfortunately don't live in an area with regular access to canines as most of my friends are either in apartments or living in the college dorms where dogs are not allowed. I'm trying to find a local dog-park on the bus route to sit and watch dogs. In the meantime, gotta work from photos and video.
The fox is a spirit tempting the coyote to leave the urban life and join him in the wilds. He's floating (foxes in my world lack ties like gravity), and in the final piece will have a glow. I kinda like the moon behind him, but it's not essential to be near him, heh. THe original had the two characters much bigger, which made it seem even more cluttered. The coyote represents a more earthly critter who has adapted to urban life. I think of it a little like a self-portrait, with my two halves fighting for control (a little dorky, I suppose).
I agree, the right-hand corner needs something. Maybe if I add some soft lights to the city it would help give it some balance while still keeping it dark. Like the dull orange lights. Hmm.....

in my experience all canids look the same in terms of expression and mimical musculature, so even a wolf in profile looking up should give you a good reference. I have half-a dozen books about wolves (with only three pics doublets) nad have plenty to work from. although I rather cuddle them. :)
floating fox spirit, soso. in that case it might look good if he actually would 'sit' on the moon. the coyote wouldn't see it that way, but still. :)
nice back story, too. :)
as for added BG lights, what about some backlighted advertisement? you can keep it out of focus, so a glowing rectangular spot might suffice.
and in the end, it was my pleasure looking so close. already a lot of details to discover there. :)
