I'm curious, are you using real youkai from myths? I know zilch about them, hence why I'm asking.

Mostly, yes, both Youkai and mythical beings from other cultures... although I'm bending the rules quite a bit with some of them, so to speak.

After chapter 13 there will be a set of notes (I'd give you a link to them right now, but... it has massive spoilers for the following chapters) where I give some more detail on the monsters-of-the-day.

I should point out that the one in chapter 2, the "Luctus", doesn't correspond to any mythology, but instead is simply the Latin term for "grief". Looking up each of their names online will give you some details.
