It is a network of mines, linked by natural and man-made tunnels, that are causing the trouble. That isn't exactly rare in the PA coal region, back in the day you had thousands of mines ranging from massive corporate operations to small digs worked by just one family.

How close did you even get to the town? Last I heard the State Troopers had it sealed off.

That, and the few brave/insane people who still live there are VERY paranoid about people coming in.

Nothing is sealed there, and 4 Houses were still standing with people lifing in there.
But only the old roads are left, all the houses are gone besides of some walls.

But its no problem to enter the city and the people there had no problem with that.

I do, but there are still two houses left with normal people living in them, and they seem to enjoy their freedom ;)
Well and besides the movie the coal fire there was just a stupid accident not a tragedy ;)

Really interesting how this real life tragedy somehow sparked the idea of Silent Hill series. I've been wanting to visit the place myself to see it in person. Is it true you can literally smell the burning fires underground?

Yes, you can see smoke comimg up and the ground is very hot at certain places.
In my opinion its not a real tragedy, the people had enough time to leave the city.
And its something that can happen if you mess with the enviroment.

The place itself was pretty cool ;)

Ugh, I wanna visit there so badly D: frankly some of my friends didn't believe there was a REAL 'silent hill' I figure take them to that place upon surprise and really freak them out XD

Sneak them out there while their sleeping, dump them in the bowels of the town and post cameras all around to see their reaction when they wake up XD

I wonder if anyone's ever gone there and got someone to take photos/video of them wandering around in a Pyramid Head costume (Silent Hill was inspired by Centralia)
