A Maiden and her Deviljho
Browsing around for Deviljho pictures, it being one of my favourite Monster Hunter monsters and all, I found one in particular that made me think up this cute little short story. Totally SFW by the way. The following image can be found here.

There was once a lonely girl in a lonely forest. Deep within it, this girl found an egg, abandoned in a nest that has been long since left to rot away with time. The girl, who came from a village not too far away, approached this egg, curious as to what it may hold. As it hatched, she trembled and hid, afraid that whatever hatched may be hungry. Out came an infant Deviljho. This Deviljho called and called, hoping its mother would hear, but no one came.
That is until a mighty Rathalos came diving from the sky, its mighty maw gaping wide. The young Jho, too terrified to move, was quickly pinned down and terribly hurt. The lone girl, who watched with great horror, could not stand to watch this horrid scene before her, and as such, grabbed a pile of dung and threw it at the Rathalos, hitting it square on the nose. Angered and disgusted by the stench the dung put out, the king of the skies gave a mighty cry as it took off into the sky, all the while clawing at its face to try and rid the smell.
The girl took the Jho unto her back and carried it to a save little abode within a small cavern, her personal hiding space when she desired to get away from her village. Inside, the Jho heaved in agony, the wounds too painful to bear. Having an idea, the girl removed some herbs she had gathered and collected earlier that day, combined the, and made an ointment that assisted in healing the Jho’s poisoned wound. Hastily, but carefully, the girl dressed the wound and waited.
An hour later, she had awoken from a nap to find the Jho by her side and nestling her side… the girl had made a new friend…
Years later, this girl, now a woman, was out gathering these very same herbs she once healed her young Jho friend with. However, on this trying day, she found herself ambushed by a pack of Genprey. The Gendrome, who lead this pack, closed in on the unwary woman, her feet and hands trembling… She shut her eyes as the Gendrome lunged, but was only met with a great gust, and a loud roar. Opening her eyes, she witnessed it; a mighty Deviljho, full grown and clearly hungry, began attacking, mutilating, and devouring the Gendrome and its pack. She went to get to her feet, but all too quickly the great devourer finished its snack and turned to this girl with a hungry gaze. Her life flashing before her eyes, she remembered the friend she made all those years ago in the secret abode, of her family who, although troublesome, loved her so very much, of her daughter aspiring to be a huntress, of her husband who forged mighty weapons for passing hunters… but she felt a simple nudge… and heard an odd sound; a sound of affection. This Deviljho was simply nuzzling her. She opened her eyes, and looked to the beast, to which she caught gaze of a wound on the left hip, the same place her old friend was harmed… It was her beloved Deviljho, returned and healthy, albeit scarred. She stood, holding this Jho’s muzzle with great affection, the Jho giving low, affectionate growls. For what seemed like hours she did this, and she loved every moment of it.
Since that day, this Deviljho cared and watched after this woman whenever she went into the plains and forest to gather for items. And for years to come, this Deviljho would secretly protect her family, each child, each generation, never forgetting its surrogate mother and beloved human companion.
