(Story by Koviell Sashermasock)
We spent the rest of the day in the village; the blizzard didn't fade until early in the morning. Guided by Moon, we traveled in the snow plain and through forest. We had a few skirmishes against highwaymen, but nothing that Malekiev couldn't handle alone. The more time I spend with him, the more he scares me. I never see him eat or drink more than a few drops of wine, occasionally.
Anyway, it's been a few days that we travel and something is about to get into our way…
"Wait. There are people ahead." Says Moon before she halts the party.
"More peons to smack down?" Asks Malekiev.
"Will you stop at some point? You're quite annoying." Mentions Kalsed.
Warthryn sniffs the air. "There are three of them."
"Do you see them clearly?"
"I'm afraid not. But they look humanoid. I think they did see us." Answers Moon.
"I think we should…"
Suddenly there is a flash of light and an echo sound strong enough to push snow around. The three man's party is in front of us. That party is composed of someone the size of an elf wearing heavy plate armour darkened by soot and armed with a vicious looking falchion. The second guy is a drow wearing a clotheset made for duelling, even though it's very cold here. He is with a rapier. The last one is an Illithid wearing a long robe covering most of his body. He have in hand a staff with a gem I never seen before at his head.
We're surprised.
The Illithid look at me and, a second after, Moon and Warthryn fall on the ground, leaving only Malekiev, Kalsed and I standing. It's the psychic trust, topical of the Illithids. The three persons had their weapon drawn.
"So there is one for each of us. I take the tin can!" Shouts Malekiev. He takes his greatsword in hand inflict a heavy hit on the guy wearing the full plate.
The Duelist sprinted to jump at Kalsed in a graceful but deadly charge. He hits his target and Kalsed is now wounded.
"So this leave only you and I, little kobold." Says the Illithid. He is speaking directly into my mind. "While kobolds taste horrible, I find their brain to be a delicious treat. If you don't resist, I won't make you suffer."
The Illithid tentacles are wiggling in all directions as he moves towards me.
I take my sword and point it at him. "I won't be your next meal." I imbue my sword with some of my magical energy and the blade is glowing with an arcane aura. I try to slash him in the guts and miss my target.
"So you're a magician. The brain of arcanists is even tastier." He points the tip of his staff at me and a bolt of energy is projected. I roll on the side to dodge the energy.
I look around. Malekiev is brawling with the guy in heavy armour. Kalsed seems to be okay against the duelist.
"Stop moving, little pest. You're just increasing your agony."
"Taste this, squidface."
I point my hand in the direction of the Illithid and focus energy. After whistling an arcane note, the energy ignites and I launch a fire orb right at his face. Direct hit.
"Die..."
The Illithid point his staff at me. As he is about to launch another ray of energy, Kalsed hits him in the back of his head with his mace.
The Illithid is surprised by the hit and look at the cleric. This gives enough time for me to lunge at the creature and place a painful strike against.
Kalsed hits the creature on the head once again and falls loudly on the ground, knocked out. He then smashes the head of the Illithid, just to be sure it's dead and stays dead.
"Are you okay Koviell?" Asks Kalsed.
"I'm okay. Thanks for the save."
"My opponent was agile, but didn't last long against divine wrath. I had to put an end to his miserable life." Explains Kalsed.
"Where's Malekiev?"
I'm looking around to see Malekiev, his face and upper body partially covered in blood.
"Are you okay Malekiev? You're covered in blood!"
"Yeah, I'm fine. This blood isn't mine. This battle was dirty, geez." Says Malekiev, before getting back on his feet, leaving his opponent bleeding on the floor.
"Let's check if any of them may carry a note or something that could tell us where they're from. Let's start with the big guy before his blood..."
"No! No! No! I mean, he was my opponent, I'll check him and if he got anything interesting, I'll tell." Rushes Malekiev.
"Mmm... Okay then. Let's check the Illithid."
We leave the task of searching the guy in armour to Malekiev while we're searching the two others. The Illithid's staff, when I pick it up, shatters into pieces. It's now useless. His robe is magical, I'll investigate it later. In any case, it's way too large for me. The rest of his possessions were either junk or items that we had no use for.
The Duelist has a magical band, this might be useful. His rapier is the work of a master, no doubt. He has many knives on him. Otherwise, he has nothing else interesting.
When I look up, I see Malekiev beheading the guy in armour.
"Did you really need to do this?"
"Just making sure he stays dead." Replies Malekiev.
"Sure, better keep 'him' dead. It wouldn't be great if the dead would rise again, don't you think?" Asks Kalsed to Malekiev, ironically.
Malekiev glares at him as an answer.
"Okay... we should check up the others. They might be dizzy, but the Illithid's attack shouldn't have been lethal."
We make sure that Moon and Warthryn are okay and back on their feet. Malekiev takes time to clean the blood from his face, but his clothes are still tainted.
"Once again, I missed all the fun." Complains Warthryn.
"At least we're safe, for now. You have my gratitude." Replies Moon.
We get back on the road, guided by Moon, leaving the 3 corpses behind in the snow.
