Blackstone in Flight
One of my more interesting peices, it's an old one, from 2006. I now know a LOT more about anatomy than I did when I made this. I'm strongly considering redoing it, as the background is gorgeous. This is my boyfriend's character, who is a flying black wolf with iridescent fur similar to an oil spill (it's named after a dirty river in Massachusetts).

or similar to some bug's carapace which shimmer in all kinds of greens and blues like shiny steel.
nice motive, and the background is indeed gorgeous. and yeah well, the wolf... hey, good thing it's digital, so you have it easier re-doing it. just keep the glowing eye, and I would place the wings 'behind' the leg shoulders again.

I didn't think of beetles and whatnot!
yea, the wolf is...well...I can do better. It was in that phase of "references? Who needs refs?" If you think this is bad the original I had done before messing with the face...*shudders* I tell people when I crit them that we all go through these phases, but in the end most people only improve when they realize refs are your friend!
I'll have to get the file form my old pooter. Now I kinda want to work on it!

I had that phase, too, but only because I had nobody to tell me. it took me many years to fidn somebody willing to sit down and tell me the truth. such are the perils of self-thaught art skills... I don't think I'll ever get rid of some mistakes I do. but I can try for sure. :)
have fun with it, I'd like to see the result! =^_^=

heh, I'm glad I'm not the only one. I was lucky in that I had a period of time where i couldn't draw much and I managed to lose a LOT of the bad habits I had developed. Not drawing for nearly a year utterly changed my skill level, but it gave me a blank slate to start on and once I actually started studying art theory on my own within two months I was producing things far better than I had done when I was drawing the same things over and over again each day. I have sketchbooks full of cats made unreferenced, as that used to be my favorite thing to draw. The anatomy is a cross between a horse and I don't know what, because horses were one of the few things I couldn't draw without some sort of picture or toy.
Not that I recommend going a year without drawing...but it can have good effects.
This is such a challenging pose, I have no idea where to begin the fix-its. *collects refs*
