I have never seen a muzzle at an acute angle to the head, but it's great!
The fingers are actually enough like spiders to scare my arachnophobic sister, your comparison is apt! You look just plain summery here... down to the mosquitoes and the smell of tiki torches and bluegill in the distance.
Love the vintage color scheme. (If you ever want to imitate a pulp magazine with a painting of yours, layer a thin cream-colored transparency on top, color black to alpha and replace it with a muddy purple brown. Those old magazines would sometimes save money by leaving off the key plate! I'm totally trying it with a piece of my own at the moment and it's all swimming in my head.)

Those can be easily replicated with oils, as long as you have as good an understanding of color and contemporary fantasy fashion to do it... give me a few years and I can probably deliver one you could pass as the real thing.
But it's a challenge like any other and I'm perfectly willing to take you on, he'd look awesome in those Wyeth-y trees. Ye gods, I've GOT to update my commission prices. (Sort of realized that a medium-size-price matrix just makes it more confusing instead of more streamlined...)

...I would actually be very interested in you doing that. :) Let me know when you update your prices!
Especially since you already know the genre, if you left empty background scenery space above the character for titling, I'd probably then haul out vintage fonts and do a 100% period-look title with story synopsis (and a price in cents). Loooooove doing period stuff. :D .

Dear god, likewise.
I... I honestly have no idea what to charge for oil commissions, I'm so lackadaisical about my technique and it's such an inconvenience (cleaning the smudges off the scanner, fitting it onto the scanner to begin with, spending ten hours waiting for the coat to dry before I go on top of it). I'm trying to emulate some of John Watkiss' stuff for my personal project, and yeah, this shit's hard. Glad I'm doing it, though. I'm a color nerd, and finally have the chance to play with color theory.
In oils, it would be in the 10-15 hours range, and it'd still take quite a bit of time to dry the individual layers. I'm experimenting with watercolor undercoats, but even that I'd have to charge at least $70 just to break even on materials and labor. There's a reason most people don't do these. If I find any shortcuts to get the price to the point where you could pay, I'll certainly let you know of that!
I'd be happy to do some calligraphy for the title and price, save you some extra work! And I can do that digitally, so I have a version with no text that's yours to play with as you please. Period stuff is so much fun.
