In the middle of nowhere, not enough fuel, and a pissy air traffic control back home.

Bad situation, getting worse. I knew some pilots who flew over the pacific during ww2. They were obsessive about always having maximum fuel load at takeoff, warming up the engines from every fuel tank, fuel conservation, and always always always knowing where they were and where all the landing strips in range were.

At least that plane is built for distance. That gives it a good glide ratio.

Not if it's not well balanced -- in this case that fuel might be forcing him to correct for the CG moving aft ...

Worse than that, with with only the feeder tanks in the wings being used, he still has most of his fuel load in the fuselage unused and unavailable, now only useless weight (close to half a ton)

And with the transfer pumps not working (and any fuel dump probably failed, too), he's got no way to correct any imbalances.

hmmm... it's like the electrical is faulting somewhere and dragging everything else (radio, fuel pumps) down with it.

It ended up that the port generator wasn't distributing to the over all system, just the port engine's on-engine pump and ignition, the starboard generator was busted and without generator juice, the starboard engine and the rest of the on-board systems were being run on a weak battery. All that was complicated by iffy breakers.
