(Story by Koviell Sashermasock)
We spent about a month in this other world. Kalsed ended up being a nice guy under his fiendish traits. Moon was spending time with us occasionally and she was always with us when a guy in Nosteferest made a request we were able to solve. Malekiev was… odd… We had no idea where he was most of the time. Warthryn was at most tolerable. He's not the kind of guy I would usually hang with.
About two days ago, a strong blizzard prevented anyone to leave the forest, unless he wanted to get lost in the storm. Hopefully, I had ways to make good use of my time. The Elder let me borrow an extra spellbook he had. I had time to get used to the arcane arts again.
Today, the Elder requested my presence. Maybe he found something to get us back home. I'm in front of his hut, this is where my story begins.
I get inside the Elder's hut. No one else is inside this time. The Elder is at the centre, sitting at a round table, looking at his crystal ball.
"Greetings Elder, you requested my presence?"
The Elder nods before answering. "I have good news, some bad news and some very bad news." Says the Elder.
"Good news? Bad news? And very bad news? Tell me about the good news,"
"The blizzard will fade this afternoon." Answers the Elder.
"Is it all about the good news? If so, tell me about the bad news."
The Elder taps the place in front of him; I go sit at the table. The Elder whispers something and his crystal ball become cloudy and images appear.
"Look and tell me what do you see." Requests the Elder.
I look at the crystal ball. I can see a hobgoblin army facing… frost giants! The hobgoblin army is getting decimated. "I see frost giants winning a battle. Is that happening right now?"
"Sadly yes… Hobgoblins of that region are old allies, they asked for help against this new threat. We're at war." Explains the Elder.
"This is terrible."
"No, it's only one of the bad news. The orcs joined forces with the frost giants. Warmaster Leto knows about it already. This new orcish and frost giant army is leaded by Mahaarwina, a relatively well known drow priestess. I have an idea of her powers, but there is something else to mention… Take a look at this…" Says the Elder before rubbing his crystal ball.
I look at the new image appearing. It's some kind of mechanical globe, with other smaller spheres around. It's some kind of clockwork device.
"I've never seen this before. What it is?"
"This is the Chronoglobe. This is in a way the heart of this world. The one that manage to use the Chronoglobe can control the time and space. The one who uses the Chronoglobe can decimate a whole nation in less than a minute. One second ago, you were a young man. The second after, you become a middle aged man. Then you die of old age. This is a powerful artifact." Explains the Elder.
"How could she be able to unearth an artifact like that? Wouldn't this be guarded by someone or something?"
"Yes, it was guarded… by the frost giants. They may be unaware that the Chronoglobe was sealed somewhere in the Frozen Citadel. Only a few knows about this secret. I suppose that she doesn't know, yet, how to use it." Tells the Elder.
"So we must find a way to stop her before she could manage to use the Chronoglobe. We have no idea of how much time it might take her to…"
The Elder interrupts me. "In fact, I know that it will take more than two weeks. I've seen many things. We must act quickly, before it's too late."
"Mmm… What should we do then?"
"Warmaster Leto will gather additional troops from nearby villages. I'll give him at most five days. When the deadline will be reached, we will travel to the Frozen Citadel and join forces with the Hobgoblins and siege the citadel." Explains the Elder.
"Mmm… I suppose that you got a mission for me, otherwise you wouldn't tell me that much about this plan."
"This is correct. There is something else that not even Warmaster Leto knows about. The siege will only be a diversion, to drag the attention of the priestess away. The real goal is to seal the Chronoglobe once and for all." The Elder conjures a scroll and hand it to me. "This will do the trick. If you're in front of the Chronoglobe, read the scroll and it will be enough."
"What if that doesn't work?"
"It must work! Otherwise… It will be our doom…"
"So this plan must not fail, otherwise we're more than screwed. Got it. Also, is the Chronoglobe the device you said that could bring us back to our world?"
"Not exactly. The portal to the other world is indeed in the Frozen Citadel, but not tied to the Chronoglobe, as much as I know."
"Okay then, I don't have any more questions."
"Moon will guide you to Lislendril. This is where the armies will join before the siege. The vanguard will most likely require your assistance. You'll have till tomorrow to get ready. Oh, and one last thing before you go, I would like you to have this."
The Elder removes a silver ring he was wearing and hand it to me. When I pick it up, it size changes to fit someone of my size.
"What does this ring do? Other than changing size."
"Do I really need to tell?"
"You don't have to."
I inspect the ring. There are draconic inscriptions on it; 'Arcanes'.
"This is a ring of wizardry!"
The Elder nods. "I have no more use of it; may this be more useful to you. Now gather your party and get ready to go. Moon is waiting for you outside."
"Thanks for the gifts."
"Farewell."
I get out of the hut to see Moon waiting for me.
"The Elder told me that we're going on the road again."
"We may not have much time."
"Your friends are waiting for us at the camp."
We walk to the camp to see everyone. Even Malekiev is there.
"So we got a special mission. We must get to Lislendril to help the vanguard."
"The vanguard?" Asks Kalsed.
"Yes, the vanguard. Nosteferest is at war and their enemy is in possession of the portal to get back to our world."
"So you tell me that we're at war and I'm not the front line yet? This is ridiculous." Comments Malekiev.
"I just learned that less than an hour ago."
"What are we waiting to move on then?" Asks Malekiev.
"That the blizzard fade. It's dangerous to travel in a blizzard, even for you, Human." Answers Moon.
Malekiev sighs in annoyance
"How much time do we have left before we go?" Asks Warthyn.
"We have until tomorrow to get moving, earlier the better. In fact, we could move on if the blizzard fades this afternoon or tonight. So pack up and be ready to move.
