My fancharacter for  whitemantis's Blade Under Mask setting, which I practically fell in love with a couple years back. I've forgotten to put up this guy til now.

"Name: Tanizaki Sadao (谷埼 貞雄)
Species: Giant Vinegaroon (Mastigoproctus giganteus)
Build: Slender, sinewy.

Tanizaki Sadao is a quiet, polite man, almost aristocratic in his behavior and manners. Although he is not easy to engage in conversation, it is hard to get him to quiet down once he gets interested in a topic. More often than not, he takes an acute interest in the personal lives of important and influential people, or some who might be connected to them. He is commonly found within the household of Lord ______, although his exact service to the lord is unknown by most. When asked about it, he smiles wanly and responds that a man must remain a mystery if he wishes to be respected. If pressed about it, he'll claim he's simply an overseer for the menial tasks of the household, such as cleaning and cooking, an obvious lie to anybody who bothers to consider it.

Sadao is actually a shinobi, a mercenary spy bound in service to his Lord. What might be taken as a rude interest in gossip at first is actually a professional assessment, gathering information, in case he ever needs to get near them for one reason or another. He is excellent at spying, often taking the guise of a field laborer or an unimportant noble to get what he needs, although he's good at the art of moving unseen as well. This is not to say he is purely professional, however. In his free periods, he has taken to writing in his quarters. In an uncharacteristically risky fashion, he writes stories and plays which are highly romanticized, poetic versions of his own experiences in his job. Nobody has seen them, and Sadao would probably take care anyone who did, in order to avoid compromising his Lord and himself.

Surprisingly, he has a deeply ingrained distaste for the noble class and their conversation topics, for which he frequents the city itself in his peasant disguise. Tea and geisha houses are his favorite venue, for the conversation and colorful people to be found there. He makes sure to always be at the city during festivals, as they're one of the few occasions when he can let himself enjoy the festivities a little.

Sadao has very poor eyesight, but is sensitive to bright light, for which he prefers nighttime to attend to business of any sort. He is not a big fan of sake, as it loosens the tongue, but for that same reason he often plies other people with it in social occasions. He thinks of it as a tool for information gathering, rather than a drink for periods of relaxation. When traveling, he tends to avoid roads, as they leave him prone to discovery or ambush by bandits.

He has a naturally unpleasant body odor, reason for which he is an avid buyer of scented items and oils, in order to mask his acrid smell. This also happens to be one of the many reasons for which he has never known the touch of a woman, not least of which is his own emotional coldness."
