(Story by Koviell Sashermasock)
A job is a job, and this one will pay well. Getting somewhere, do the dirty work; sounds like an easy job to me.
The boat trip was long and annoying; I hate the sea. At least my friends are there to keep me company, otherwise I would have burned something on the deck. I've been asked to retrieve a winter orb located in a long time abandoned conservatory. Since they're too busy, or I should say afraid, to get it back themselves, they hired me for the job. I gathered the right party for this task.
First off, Fearick. He's an expert then it comes to travel in natural areas. If we don't want to get lost, he's the guy we need. Next, Bormac. He got an extended knowledge of monsters that can lurk around, he fought many of then underground. If a creature got a weakness, I'm sure he will spot it. Next, Salrith. Magic is convenient, so as a wizard, he will be useful anytime. Next, Altallo. His knowledge of divine powers will be useful anytime we might get wounded or sick. Last but not the least, myself, Koviell. My magic is here to empower and protect. I always got a trick for any encounter. We're a good five-'bolds party.
After spending a day in town for preparations, we're travelling on the frozen wastes in the direction of the conservatory. Fearick, on his wolf Gnarl, is opening the march, followed by Bormac. Altallo is at the centre. Salrith is behind him and I'm at the back. We're far from the coast now; this is where our story begins…
"Look everyone, there is snow everywhere." Says Altallo.
"I know, there is snow here and there."
"Look, there is even more snow there. It's fun!" Says Altallo.
"Fun? No! It's cold! And it's too bright outside!" Shout Bormac.
"I could have bought you sundark glasses, but you declined."
"I craft my own equipment." Says Bormac.
"Okay then, I could have bought the sundark glasses, break them and let you patches the pieces, but now it's too late."
"Pff, not funny." Says Bormac.
"How long will it take to get there?" Ask Salrith.
"At least two days, if I look at the map. More if there is a snowstorm." Says Fearick.
"Even more snow then. Could we build up a snowman?" Asks Altallo.
"Maybe later."
"Okay! This is going to be fun!" Says Altallo.
"Now let's focus on our task. We don't know what threat we could face."
"I'll throw light sparkles at the evil monster, or a snowball since there is snow everywhere!" Says Altallo.
"I don't think this would be effective." Says Bormac.
"But it would be fun!" Says Altallo.
"It will take more than a snowball to hurt anyone." Says Fearick.
"So we can make a snowball fight!" Says Altallo.
"I don't think that someone or something that wishes us harm would like to make a snowball fight." Says Salrith.
"Why not?" Asks Altallo.
"Because if it's a threat, we might need to slay it." Says Bormac.
"Poor monster. What if he sees us as monster himself?" Ask Altallo.
"Mmm… he got a point." Says Salrith.
"We will see then." Says Bormac.
"Maybe it could be a fluffy and cuddly monster." Says Altallo.
"Silly Altallo. Don't end up knocked out on your first quest."
"I'll be careful then." Says Altallo.
"Hey guys, I see something ahead." Says Fearick.
"What it is?"
"Some sort of table thingy." Says Fearick.
"We should take a look."
"What if it's some dangerous device?" Asks Salrith.
"There is only one way to find that."
"If it blows up, I put the blame on you Koviell." Says Bormac.
I glare at him. He finds that funny.
"Maybe it's a table where people eat sometime." Says Altallo.
"Maybe, maybe not.
We walk to the table-like in front of us. Fearick is looking around while Salrith check if this object is imbued with magic. It doesn't seem so. I take a look myself, I don't see any mechanism in this 'table' thing. Weird.
"Wait wait, I know what it is." Says Altallo.
"You do?" Asks Bormac.
"Yes yes, it's a solar clock. But a piece is missing. It looks broken." Says Altallo.
"Solar clock?" Ask Bormac.
"Yes, to know what time it is. It's useful." Says Altallo.
"Another surfacer thingy. Pff." Says Bormac.
"But now it's a cool table. We should eat here." Says Altallo.
"You're hungry already?"
"No, but it could be fun to eat here." Says Altallo.
"It's a bit cold to take a snack right here." Says Salrith.
"You find this place cold? I feel alright."
"Not 'everyone' is simply used to cold temperatures." Says Salrith
"I'm good myself, and Gnarl keeps me warm."
"My special poncho keeps me warm. So I'm good." Says Altallo
"Can we get moving before we freeze in place?" Asks Bormac.
"Sure thing, let's go."
"Koviell?" Asks Altallo.
"Yes?"
"Catch!" Shout Altallo.
Altallo throws a snowball at me. I sidestep and dodge the snowball. Unfortunately, Salrith gets hit by it.
"Whoops, wrong target. My bad." Says Altallo.
"Learn to aim, shrimp. Hehe"
"But I'm not a shrimp! I don't live in the water and I don't have pincers." Says Altallo.
"For now. This could be done." Says Salrith.
"This would be mean." Says Altallo.
"Okay hatchlings, can we get moving?" Asks Fearick.
"We're going, we're going."
We travel in the snow wastes for some time. All we can see is snow, and more snow. Without any word, Fearick stopped the march.
"Is there something?"
"Silence. There is something odd…" Says Fearick, unsure.
Bormac crouches and put his hand on the frozen ground. "Is that… tremors?"
"Would this be an earthquake?" Asks Altallo.
"I doubt this would be an earthquake." Answers Salrith.
"What could this be then?"
"There is something under us…" Whispers Fearick.
We all take our weapons in hand, except Altallo who don't have any, and form a circle.
"What could this be?" Asks Altallo.
"I hope it's not a worm."
"Is the mage afraid of crawlies?" naggers Bormac.
I hiss at him.
"Please stop you two, we better…" Commands Fearick before he gets interrupted.
A strong tremor made Altallo and Salrith lose their balance and fall on the frozen ground. They didn't have the time to stand up that the frozen ground shattered and a huge, huge serpentine creature with many legs came out of the earth. Bormac is projected into the air while everyone else was pushed away. There is an immense heat coming from this creature.
"What is that thing?" Asks Altallo.
"A Remorhaz! A huge one!" Shouts Salrith.
Bormac landed on the head of the creature. The Remorhaz roars in our direction. His long, long serpentine body splits Altallo from the rest of the party.
"Help me guys!" Yells Altallo, completely scared.
"Altallo, protect yourself! Hang in there Bormac!"
Fearick aims at the creature and shoots a volley of arrows at it. The arrows that didn't break are lodged into his chitin.
"The Light protects against the greatest terrors." After this short prayer, a sphere of light appears around Altallo, granting him protection.
Bormac grabs one of the antennas of the creature, to have some kind of sure grip on the creature. The Remorhaz noticed the kobold on his head, he shakes his head to make him fall. Bormac keep his grip, but he's sent from a side to the other side of the head of the creature.
"Let's do it Salrith."
"You bet."
I launch a fire orb at the Remorhaz, a direct hit. This spell is quickly followed by a fireball from Salrith, which caused the creature to howl in pain after the fiery explosions. The Remorhaz enrages and there is a very strong wave of heat around it; like if the air around catches fire.
"Kill this creature before we end up deep fried!" Fearick shoots another volley of arrows at the creature. One of them ends right into an eye of the creature.
"What do I do guys? It's too hot here!" Yells Altallo.
"Blind the monster! Use your light!"
"Okay!" Altallo open his palms and aim at the face of the Remorhaz. "The Light shall pierce the darkness." A mist of light sparkles hits the creature before turning into a ray of light, blasting the Remorhaz and piercing his scales and leaving an open wound.
The Remorhaz roars in rage, open his mouth wide and swallows Altallo. Bormac manages to get back on his feet, on top of the creature.
"Altallo! No! Bormac, kill the Remorhaz!"
Bormac takes his spear and impale the head of the creature. The first hit pierced his tough scales, the second strike went through his brain, killing the creature. The Remorhaz falls on the ground loudly, spitting back Altallo.
"Altallo! Altallo! Are you okay?"
We gather around the yellow'bold as he gets back on his feet. "I've been in a dark and scary place. I don't want to get back there again."
"At least you're safe now."
"Should we get moving?" Asks Salrith.
"Wait wait wait." Answers Fearick. "I want his scales. This would make a very good armour."
"I suppose that you would like a sample too Bormac?"
"This could be useful." Says Bormac.
"Okay then, let's do this quick before another one gets here."
"But if there is another one, this would make even more amour." Tells Fearick, with a smile.
"Don't push our luck little guy."
Fearick stick his tongue as an answer. We laugh. We some time to let Fearick and Bormac picking enough scales sample before moving up for new adventures.
