One of the greatest celebrations occur among kobold warrens upon hearing a dragon has agreed to the terms offered for becoming a guardian of their clan. The time it takes to come to an agreement depends on several factors... such as whether the dragon or kobold negotiator have an advantage during the discussions. There have been a multitude of tomes written by kobold scholars on the subject... not to mention various techniques deployed by both dragons and kobolds.
It is often said that while an older dragon may provide more prestige... a younger dragon is often more amicable to having more flexible terms for their employment and transition into a guardian. The downside being that the younger dragon must be groomed through several generations of the warren's inhabitants. The end result though is a dragon that ideally fits the warrens stance.

....Oh gooood. That's like. Adorably cute. And gives me ideas.
The whole idea of a young dragon's mind being snared like that, and over generations of training, mind-fuckery, and such is completely in-tune with the village, recalling every lover and the like, even if departed, bound to the village in such a meaningful way. Perhaps even encouraging more to be enticed over like they were...whether they were oblivious to their own induction or not. Not like it'd matter after the first generation or so.
