Cycle of Harvest, Day 53
132 Raven Year
The times of harvest always takes its toll on the newest in training. One can see all those that came from farming homes. While we do our best to keep them busy, you can still see their faces hold concern for the loved ones they left behind. This is truly the time to let all of the newest shine and show their determination, or for them to loosen their grip and return to their lives. There was a patchy hound occupying himself in the courtyard the other day. He was so wrapped up in though, he didn’t even stand at my passing. While any of my hands would have taken great offense to this, I took his daze as fatigue and worry. We are all living beings and emotion is not a weakness, no matter how much we tell ourselves otherwise. I don’t foresee that young man staying too much longer. I’ve been here too many years and the young never change. I even saw it in my day. He will worry and lose sight of his goals here. His potential will be missed from our forces, but I’m sure it will be put to good work back where he came from.
With the note of potential, the Cycle of Birth recruits are just recovering from their ordeal. The dragon fibers have finished taking root and they are just about healed. We had lost many of them to fever this time. I think I heard that only five or so survived. I recall at least 23 entering that season. What a shame. The loss is always grave, even at one. But the circumstances give the rest of them such greater drive. The feline to be designated Dragonslayer A, if I recall correctly, did have some promise with this challenge of fortitude. They were one of the first ones up and on their feet again. Albeit wobbly, but on their feet. In the coming week, we are giving them the initiate’s gear, sealing them into our organization. They should be proud of themselves and I look forward to their feats.
Notice had come back from a sect we had sent out to the north country. Two of the five have been reported as dead in the field. The report also stated that they found the dragon in question, but it was being sheltered by others. If I didn’t know any better, I’d say they were no better than we were. I feel that I would harbor a person from a dragon assault even without knowing anything about their past. Maybe they are doing the same. Or maybe I’ve been in this temple too long and have lost sight of the world. Either way, it would pain me to order all of those creatures to be destroyed. If they are nothing but mere animals, then they don’t know any better. If they are smart like us, then we should understand the way they, for we might do the same. As much as my advisors want to send more slayers out and just clear the den, I will most likely hold out as long as I can and send a private scout to find a better way. I hope it doesn’t come to a slaughter.
These old bones tire of the bloodshed.
Making some flavor and background to my world. Feel free to ask questions and leave comments.
