Point well taken. I do not have the answer to this issue, but I appreciate conversation to exchange ideas. Does your position apply in general? I have seen many babies and smaller children who appear to be raised with love, caring, and attention (the opposite of neglect); yet they seem to have no concept of love (or even consideration) of self or others. I have also seen many children who are raised in horrendous circumstances of neglect that achieve wonderful caring personalities. And there are many in the gradients in the middle. It seems much is up to the individual.
That being said, I do offer this example to argue support for "the journey through darkness" point.
Without something else to contrast something to, a "not this" reference, how do I know or appreciate anything? Oh I can talk about a feeling, but do I really know what it means to (or for) me? Fortunately, I have empathy. I am able to learn these "not this" references by watching others so I get the learning without the first hand pain. A really fortunate trick for me. As an example, I have never been homeless (just close), but I have an extreme appreciate the great good luck having achieved a stable life with the modern miracles of a safe place to live, safe drinking water, indoor plumbing, electricity, the Internet, and a list too long to site here. I never really deeply appreciated these gifts until got to know and studied several homeless persons. It really elevated my appreciation, it opened my eyes and heart, to what I have in a way that was not possible without knowing these homeless or being homeless myself. So much of what I see in realty seems to follow this pattern of not knowing, really knowing, the value of something until it is not there. Until the "not this" reference is present in the soul.
