This is a picture of Lord Set, the Egyptian God of chaos, warfare, foreigners, diplomacy, the deserts and tactics. He is the brother of Osiris, Isis, Nyphthys and Horus the Elder (not to be confused with Horus, the son of Osiris and Isis). Every night, Set rides on the celestial boat with Ra, god of creation to do battle with the forces of darkness and to defeat the evil serpent of chaos, Apep (aka Apothis).
The type of animal Set represents is unknown and still speculated on. Set's strength is such that he is considered the strongest of the gods and is the protector of Egypt. His strength and loyalty to his great grandfather Ra is such that he is the only god worthy and able enough to have the honor of fighting alongside Ra in the underworld during the night to fight the forces of evil.
Set's strength is so overwhelming and legendary that it is said that a foreign sea god giving Egypt and the gods trouble was literally one shotted, or killed with one hit, when said sea god tried to take Set's wife as payment. The payment in question was for a month of peace before the sea god came back for more. Set would of interceded before hand, but, at the time, Egypt was split between two halves and the half the sea god was bothering was Horus' half. LOL. ^\/^.
When Osiris took the throne as king of the gods, after his wife Isis took it from Ra with blackmail and torture, Set asked Osiris to give the right back to Ra. When Osiris refused, Set killed Osiris. There was also the incident of Osiris cheating on Set's wife that also led to the incident. Also the jealousy Set had over Osiris for cheating on his wife Nephthys is often mixed in with the throne debacle and warped to say that the jealousy was over power and not the cheating. Over time, especially after a civil war between two pharaohs, the lie was perpetuated till it stuck. The reality is that Set is perhaps the most loyal of the gods as well as the strongest. ^\/^.
