actually some one asked me this yesterday on my DA account i never use, so i'll tell you what i told him:
1. Pick your colour last, it's tempting to do it first but you should always match your colour to your design not the other way around.
2. Really think about what makes your girl unique design wise (like all of Tatters clothes are broken, Blewit was raised by toads she she has mushroom themed clothing and accessories, etcetera).
3. Be fun with the hair. It's one of the few places you get to show your characters uniqueness so make the most of it.
4. making a unique design is hard, and it's even harder to keep the unique design simple. don't just add shit, really think and don't over complicate. it pays to be patient with your design.
