Hard drive failures really suck, that's why I keep my artwork directory set for google drive, and important docs folder to one drive. In the event of a failure, there is a cloud based backup.

I'm trying to get her to use a system like Copy.com or Dropbox but unfortunately the sheer amount of data used by high quality art files tends to fill up the free account limits quickly, and falvie isn't exactly in the situation to pay for full accounts...

Well, it can be a bit pricey, but setting up a raid config would significantly reduce chance of loosing data.

IIRC it was an external hard drive, so RAID wasn't exactly an option :(

I still think an online *and* local solution is best; much harder for one failure to cause the loss of everything.

Have you looked into a product called CrashPlan? I'm pretty sure the free version allows automatic backup onto a separate local drive or even a trusted computer. Don't have the link atm since I'm on my phone but should be easy to find.

I'll get her to look into it but I think the main problem is that right now most of her income is going toward rent and food, so not much spare money to spend on file space.

But that's the thing, you can basically let her back up on your computer (for example) and it would be completely free for both of you. If you have the space, just make a folder on your machine and set it up to receive her backups. The bonus is she can even make a "completed commissions" folder that could automatically back up to your machine, and basically you'd have all the files already there to send to people and you won't be waiting for her to send them to you. Obviously there's a degree of risk, but looking at your profile you seem to know about computers so you can make your own decision how you guys want to handle that. I haven't tried the service myself, but from what I understand it's probably a good solution to the way you guys handle commissions together.

It looks a lot like SAI's water color brush, it's a great shading tool since it's essentially a brush combined with the blur tool. :D

If you have trouble with crashing drives, it might be worthwhile to look into mirror raiding 2 or more hard drives.
