I. Love. Proteans.
I only discovered the race about a week ago, when I picked up a copy of Bestiary 2 in a local used book store and have since spent time looking up everything I can about them. Here are three facts about them I find particularly interesting.
1. They are true harbingers of chaos. They don't have any real evil intention towards others, or, as a whole, feel any real malice towards other beings. They are simply all about chaos.
2. They have unstable forms. Though they generally look like like a mix of snake, bird and dinosaur, exactly how the three elements mix at any given time shifts, so they never look exactly the same twice.
3. They can generate "warp-waves," ripples in the fabric of reality that cause random, uncontrolled changes to anyone or anything caught in it. If you get caught in one, anything could happen, from bloating up like a balloon, to growing a bunch of tentacles that you can't control, to complete transformation into something else. The proteans themselves have no way of predicting what the warp-wave will do.
I find them to be just all-around awesome. If anybody else wants to use the protean character in this piece for their own stuff, feel free. I don't own the proteans, just use them under the OGL Pathfinder publishes their material with.
On a side note, there are not very many platypus tfs out there, I notice. there's not even a category for them under species.
