Strength manifested, ten-thousand feet tall,
A sky filled with muscle preparing to fall.
Power with eyes, selecting his mark,
A sea of souls engulfed in the dark.
And just for a second, their eyes would meet,
The victor relishing his victims' defeat.
His heavy shadow poised for the kill,
The helpless doomed to their master's will.
He chooses his moment, and taking a breath...
...his muscles unleash the crash of death.
The planet lies shaking 'neath the laughing beast,
The air a salvo of his power released.
His weight bears down, the flesh compacts,
The earth surrenders, the tarmac cracks...
It's official. I've gone mad.
I really don't know what to say. I really don't. Not to blow my own trumpet, but I can't quite believe I've done this.
blueanthroraptor asked me a while back if he could use my old "Rexar Says Welcome To LD5" pic on the site's new homepage following its relaunch earlier this year, but I told him that I wanted to make something new to reflect my current standards. After a while though, I just got that feeling that I've had with many pieces of mine up to now - that sense that "...y'know what? This is looking pretty good... I might see if I can make it the best bit of work I've ever done" which then drives you on to put absolutely everything you've got into the piece to make it so. That's exactly what I did with this one, and even I can't quite believe the results.
Just to explain a few things about it;
Firstly, the textures. This is the first time I've actually tried to make Rexar look like the sexy scaly beast that he is. At the same time though, I prefer to think of Rexar's palms and soles as having a smoother texture, so I tried to create two distinctly different surfaces and blend them together as naturally as possible.
Secondly, the buildings - I've tried realistic buildings before in "King of Rampage", but for this one, I wanted to go a step further. The looks-a-bit-like-Sears-Tower one on the bottom-right was by far the biggest bitch of the bunch to get right, but I really like how it came out. I'm still not convinced the angles are right on all of them in relation to the perspective, but once I look at the towering behemoth beyond them, I suddenly don't care anymore. Lol!
Finally, Rexar's size - as you can probably tell from the positioning, this is the biggest I've drawn him (with the exception of the one with the world between his toes). The more eagled-eyed among you may also notice some of the falling debris raining down from Rexar's foot is a little more than just debris - there's several furry characters (not crushed up, mind), a half-mashed truck, the plane crunched into his pads, a coach, a car, a few trees... y'know, just the usual things which you might find sprinkling down from the soles of a giant beast in the midst of a rampage.
Oh, and as for the words - I don't know, really. They just kinda came to me the evening I first started sketching this out, so I formulated them into a sonnet of sorts and noted it down. Maybe it adds a little something to it, I dunno.
I'm absolutely thrilled with this one, and to all of you, I hope you like it as much as I do.

Just....wow. Not only is that a glorious footpaw right there. It's so nicely textures. Looks so real and at the same time so vibrant. The muscles are so nice and toned in smooth shape, looking so natural. And the glint on the claws? Amazing. You can ACTUALLY SEE the depth in his body, like if you had the picture in front of you it'd be three dimensional. But the paw...oohhh the paw...that's the best. So marvelously textured to make it look so ridged, so real with it's bends and imprints. Just, amazing.
You know, I can't really say anything that can contribute to the expressions already given.
The depth of detail is purely astonishing, and is similar to your Rocky picture. Though this brings rexar in a light all his own. I must admit, i've no clue how much time this must have taken you...but every single -pixel- of detail shows in this, that you went all out.
I'm astonished, and yet, left trying to resist the urge to immediately explode into a tantric orgasm of epic proportions. Truly, you've allowed everyone to see rexar from a new point of view (no pun intended)
I hope to see more from you, and also hope that you continue to strive forward in the name of desire, and progress :)

lol, I'm going to use the most NERDY comparison as possible to this...
In the dungeon's and dragons/forgotten realms universe. The dwarves, being the masters of metal they are, have a ritual among their people. A master smith is to go out, and find a mithril vein (mithril being a form of dense, magical metal that's either brittle or indestructable depending on how well it's forged) which they are to mine and find a perfect, pure gahtering of ore from it. Then they're to melt it down, and make into the most glorious, most perfect, and most beautiful weapon they've ever made. This, my friend, is your "mithril weapon"

Dear Gods.
That is one of the most amazingly dynamic, skillful and ambitious macrofurry pictures I have ever seen. Other people in the comment chain have covered pretty much all of the comments on details and the rest that I would make. Simply extraordinary. The dedication you have to get something done of that magnitude of quality and detail says a lot about you.
I shall run screaming into the night now, hoping I'll be able to catch the view of Rex about to take the step after that one. :)
Yep. You Win.

Lol - I assure you I've never used any 3D rendering software in my life, mate! I do actually have a rather large collection of backups for this picture which I saved as I went along, and they make for quite an interesting chart of progression!
Thanks, BTheC.
Thanks, BTheC.
wow that's some mega Rexxar! *gasp* but truly amazing textures yes! :D
I just gotta love that plane smushed in so nicely in your soft foot! XDD
and nice details on the buildings and such, I had no idea about this new kinda realistic style :D very cool!
*instant fav*
hey btw, I sent you an email a while back, did you get it?

UTTERLY STAGGERING! I am truly overwhelmed by the amazing detail and design of this picture. I don't think you've ever done something quite so... vivid! The way you drew this is amazingly realistic and I'm totally overwhelmed, though I'm surprised about how few micros are squished under his foot.
Well seeing as we're talking about him being so big that a plane looks small against his foot, I wasn't really sure how best to fit tiny micros into it, plus I didn't want it to be messy. There are numerous furs dotted about in the sky though.
Thanks, mate.
Thanks, mate.
*claps applause here too*
Like I already said on LD5, its an amazing picture and I really think you've outdone yourself, once again. Its an amazing impressive concept as a whole, and the detail is no less impressive. Thanks a ton for making this. : )
(blueraptor is just a redirect-account, as I couldnt change the name)

WOW. I knew you were one of the better artists on here but now I'd say you're one of the best. I perfectly understand not drawing like this too often it obviously took a lot of time. Especially in terms of colored/shaded art you're very very high up there despite the fact that your quality level is less consistent (ranges from very good to unspeakably amazing) than some other artists (like Zen who is consistently amazing).
Do you think you could post some sort of time line of images showing the process of making this?

As I said to BillyTheCat, I've actually got a lot of backups saved of this as I went along. They aren't really at very distinctive stages of the process, so it won't be a particularly useful timeline, but you'll certainly see a progression. I might see if I can knock up a chart and put it on my site. I'll provide a link if and when I do.
Oh, and thanks very much - I'm a big fan of ZEN, actually, so even to be compared at that level is quite an honour.

I've just posted a journal about this now. Click here.
Amazing work! This is the high caliber I need to learn, honestly. You're able to ditch the black ink outlines and make 'lines' with shifts in color and tone...
My biggest critique for this is the lack of perspective. Everything's in sharp, crystal clear focus, and if he was indeed two miles tall, the buildings, the foot, or the upper body would be out of focus somewhat. Personally, I'd try blurring the buildings 2 times and the face/upper body once, and see how well that 'pops out' the focal point of the piece, the paw. Also blurring falling debris depending on where they are in 3space. :D

Well I agree that would be more realistic, but we both know macrophilia isnt all about realism. O: ) (as much I prefer it graspable and consistent)
Yes, given the size the entire upper body would be blued-out and likely blurred and hazed by all the air in between, but sometimes we want to be able to actually see thing in pictures as well, and I like how one can admire the details and juiciness and lovelyness and splendidness and awseumness of rexar in all its glory.
Its more a shiny pic and standout/logo image, not a physics simulation or documentary one (which also can hold their thrill making it more credible, yes), where you would be right. (I lacks the crotch setup it would need for that, too ;) ).
But who knows, maybe if our RipRoarRex has another year to spend... O: )

In actual fact, Tyrnn, I do use the perspective blurring effect frequently in my work, but I consciously decided against using it in this. As much as I do think it's a good effect, I really didn't want to compromise the level of detail I'd gone to in the character, the buildings or even the debris by blurring any of it. Instead, I just decided to let the shape and angle determine the depth.
Thanks anyway. I'm still fairly new to the no-outlines look myself, but I like what can be achieved with it. Knowing the standard of your work, I'm sure you could give it a decent shot.

>nodnods< I think I'm gonna have to try it. How did you manage to eliminate the outlines and such? The only way I can conceive is by pencilling up a work, scanning it, and then just slapping on layers of color using the pencils as a guide. Is that how you proceeded with this?
(Replied in my journal - just so that other people don't think I left your query unanswered! Lol!)
hey i know, and i know how this all works - i did that all too , in the same way - so no problem!
my first try to do it without outlines turned into a good effekt but so much things i dont like, like the fur:

Wow - extremely nice work RRRex. I like all your attention to detail on this one from the textures, to proportion, to shading. That must have taken A LOT of work. What's astonishing to me is how your progressing so much from detailed image to detailed image. It's getting kinda scary, heh. Of course the footpaw lover in me thinks what a wonderful scent would be in the air if you were fortunate enough to see (and survive) a visit from Rexar like that. :P
and the "OSCAR" 2008 for the best new macro art style picture goes tho ............
RipRoarRex
thats one of my moast favorite pics in 2008
i still hope you will enjoy arts and macro ?
maybe you got the time for a chatting again?

I know this picture is really old now, but I never commented on it before and I think I should now. :) It seems over time I've come to appreciate feet more and more, and it seems scaly feet in particular. So I happened to look back at this picture today and I must say I find it incredibly sexy :) Everything about that foot hovering above so high up in the sky... how it looks, the sheer SIZE of it... I can't tell you how much I love seeing that plane there to emphasize how big he is, sinking into his sole as he steps down.. or maybe just stuck there... hehe. Well I could go on and on but I just wanted to leave a proper comment... even if it is almost 2 years late :) I love this picture!
