Yeah, I remember the blindness period. I was starting procedures to ship Steve to Iceland, so we could take advantage of it's (Gasp! The Horror!) socialized medicine to fix his eyes. But the US medics finally pulled their collective finger out just before I had to cough up for the airline tickets.
The system here is so screwed, even mocking it isn't funny. It's killing my friends, dammit!
At least Steve got some of his goals accomplished and had some fun before his premature departure. If only thanks to his stubborness and work ethic. Goodbye, my grumpy ol' buddy.

Well, assuming we can get people to quit whining along purely political lines, perhaps we'll get enough people to see that Obama is turning us to face the right direction to go forward with to get to a health care system that works, even if all we've taken so far is a measly half-step towards it.

Biggest lessons I myself took from Steve's life story and the recent journal posts are as follows:
- Exercise regularly, maintain a healthy diet and body weight
- Maintain life insurance
- A high school diploma ≠ gainfully civilian employment
- Master a certifiable trade
- Start your own business
- NEVER GET MARRIED
- If you must drive for a living, get a CDL and Hazmat cert., pays better.
I'll defer to you in regards to being born with chronic illness, but I disagree with the assumption that having wealthy parents will equal wealthy kids. I've studied enough history and read up on enough of the worlds wealthiest and most successful people to understand that being born to wealthy parents doesn't necessarily equal being wealthy yourself, in many cases it can be a handicap. Even more so if your wealthy parents where the ones who accumulated the wealth. Being wealthy yourself is mostly a result of a combination of beneficial market climate situations, self determination, self discipline, and possessing in-demand skill sets. Mind you, you can still become wealthy without all four of the points I described.
The man gave good advice -- and so did his father -- words to live by.
Yep, I can relate. Just over two years ago, at the end of 2013, my former boss had his hip replaced. Elective surgery. He was out of work for a month, but his out-of-pocket expenses were $214 U$D. In July 2014, I had an emergency appendectomy. I was only allowed to stay out for two weeks, and I have a sit-on-my-butt, IT job. I also had the same health insurance. My out-of-pocket expenses were about $5,800, thanks only to Obamacare interfering with private insurance.
