People seem to have noted the shininess on some of my badges, so I've knocked up a (very) quick tutorial on how I did it. Hope it's of use to someone.
I've placed this in my scraps folder for now. I'm not entirely sure how good the tutorial is or how useful it will be to anyone. If enough people find it mildly useful, maybe I'll promote it and do more.

You don't actually have to fill the layer with black if the layer is transparent to begin with... and if you use different levels of the grayscale beyond pure white, you can fade in the gloss marks to alter how the shine looks. Every color away from pure black will give you a different level of shine.
