Contest Entry: Barry Ortell
Entry for
wrathofautumn contest. The world needs more anthro llamas anyway.
Name: Barry Ortell
Species: Llama
Age: 21
Fur Color: Brown and Cream
Eye Color: Brown
Height: 6'9"
Weight: 200 Lbs.
Power: Passive Mind Reading
Occupation: Mechanic
Personality: Relaxed, good humored, a bit slow at times, obsessive when it comes to machines
Background: Barry Ortell lives on Mya-Kin, a small fringe world of the Ten Empires. There he works as a mechanic, maintaining the geothermal power generators, mining equipment, and life support systems of the outpost. Barry has always been fascinated by machines and as a child would tinker with clocks and other devices to figure out how they work. He now has his dream job and while the planet itself is nothing much to look at, the metal corridors and chambers of the colony is paradise to him. Nothing is more beautiful to him than machinery all working perfectly and in harmony. Music to him is the sound of gears, pistons, and engines. Barry makes it a personal endeavor to know every aspect of a machine intimately. He calls them his friends and claims every one of them, from the geothermal power plants to break room microwave oven has feelings. "If you treat them well they'll treat well in return," or so Barry claims. Most of the colonists are a bit skeptical but ever since Barry has been on the job mechanical failures has been at an all time low so no one is complaining. Also, due to the dangerous nature of his work his job pays quite well, more than the average citizen on Ordon in fact. This helps him indulge in his hobby of collecting antique machines, specifically vehicles. The most recent addition being a peculiar, large over sized, fuel inefficient machine mysteriously known as a "Hummer," the only one still known to exist.
Barry's power is passive mind reading. This means that while he can read minds he can't pick and choose who's minds he reads and can't turn it on and off. These mind reading sessions last for about 30 minuets and come in an hourly basis. During these sessions he receives random brain signals from people and ends up sounding like mumbo-jumble of voices. Usually one stands out more than the others. This prompts his usual response of "Hu? You say something?" which is then usually followed by a head shake from the person. Everyone in the colony has been asked this at least once by Barry. At first he didn't know he had this ability and thought he just had really good hearing. Even to this day he's still a bit oblivious to it and is the source of if obsession with ear hygiene and q-tips. Barry keeps a large supply locked away and goes through them quite quickly. He does have an ear condition that does cause it to build up wax quickly though it is completely unrelated to his mind reading ability. Other people find it kind of nasty when he leaves his used q-tips around the place. Barry says he's just saving them for later. He has a collection of used q-tips he keeps in a small shoe box, one of them he's used over 50 times and very caked on with ear wax. For some reasons Berry is very proud of this q-tip.
