Waving them around at random works, yes, but it looks more disorganized. Watch what other people do and try to figure out how they did things that look cool. Patterns of motion tend to be interesting, especially if you can do them smoothly.
You can actually kind of reverse engineer my photos, too. Follow the trails back to where they first appear and that is where the hands started. You just have to get the sticks to follow a similar path.
Now, spinning glowsticks is an entirely different beast. If you decide to try spinning, expect to hit yourself an awful lot at first. It takes a lot of practice to get good at it.
