Because I wanted something simple, gorgeous and nostalgic! =)
Also, for many Smashers, Melee is the heart of the Super Smash Bros. community as well as their favorite game.
But don't worry, I believe I will also upload a picture for Smash 4! This one will be the "Featured Submission" while Melee will be the "Profile ID". SSBFurs wishes to honor both games equally.

(Forgive me. The previous hidden comment was mine! I forgot to switch accounts when writing my reply!)
You are wrong, the newest installment of a franchise does not represent the franchise as a whole. You have to be rather closed-minded to make such a claim. What about Super Mario and The Legend of Zelda? Is Super Mario 3D World supposed to represent the whole Super Mario franchise? I do not think so. Also, there are many casual Smashers who love Super Smash Bros. Melee. Take a look at Nintendolife. This game is not limited to the competitive scene at all. You have no right to teach SSBFurs what to do with such a biased opinion toward the competitive side of the community, which represents a large portion of this group.
We try our best to represent the whole Super Smash Bros. franchise. It includes Super Smash Bros. 64, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U / 3DS.

I took a look at Nintendolife to see what you meant by it but since it is a news site the only things Smash Bros related on the front page was Smash 4 related (how about that?). I'm sorry to say I'm wrong is very close minded in of itself. Take a look at any 'neutral' game franchise facebook page to give you an idea. The official Super Mario facebook page does think that Super Mario 3D World represents Super Mario as a whole right now, same goes for the Smash Bros facebook page. The Legend of Zelda page uses Hyrule Warriors to represent Zelda right now and will likely be changing over to Majora's Mask when it is nearing release. You can disagree with my opinion on how a Neutral named group should be run (even though most neutral groups do indeed do what I suggest), but please try to understand my only concern was that this group was being hinted at being Melee biased as typically whenever someone mentions competitive and Smash Bros. I've seen plenty of groups and or Smash Bros MELEE groups being represented as just Smash Bros as if Melee is the only Smash Bros game. The Melee fanbase has a very loud elitist section of the group which again gives me reason for concern.
Oh and yes I have every right to make a suggestion on how the group represents because being a SSBFur, I am being represented by this group that's how neutral groups typically work.

When I said to take a look at NintendoLife, I mean to take a look at this. http://www.nintendolife.com/news/20.....mash_bros_game
Remember that NintendoLife is a community dedicated to Nintendo in general and not just Super Smash Bros. Therefore, we can agree it doesn't lean toward the competitive side. Even though Super Smash Bros. for Wii U is the fan-favorite by a long margin, Super Smash Bros. Melee is loved by a very sizable minority of the casual community. Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Smash Bros. 64 are also loved. SSBFurs does not want to ignore it.
Let's not limit ourselves to NintendoLife and let's take Reddit for example as well, more specifically the Super Smash Bros. subreddit. Because it is strictly covering the Super Smash Bros. franchise, we can agree it is more competitive-oriented. If you compare the two posts welcoming the presence of Super Smash Bros. Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Melee at EVO 2015, you can notice there is more love toward the presence of Melee. You can compare the number of thumbs up and the comments in general to force yourself an opinion. Once again, while Super Smash Bros. Melee is the fan-favorite by a long margin, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U is loved by a very sizable minority of the competitive community.

Also, I do not see how Super Mario and The Legend of Zelda Facebook pages believe that Super Mario 3D World and Hyrule Warriors are supposed to represent the whole franchise. There is a large difference between a game supposed to represent the whole franchise and the coverage / advertisement of a game. For example, The Legend of Zelda Facebook page shows Majora's Mask and Hyrule Warriors for sake of marketing, considering one of them is going to be released soon while the other has been recently released. Also, I've seen quite a few Wind Waker and Ocarina of Time posts. A dedicated The Legend of Zelda fan will never, ever say that Hyrule Warriors is supposed to represent the whole franchise when he played Ocarina of Time, for example.
Like I told you, we are going to honor Super Smash Bros. for Wii U equally as Super Smash Bros. Melee. There is no need to be worried. We, at SSBFurs, do not want to be like The Legend of Zelda Facebook page which covers Hyrule Warriors much more than other games. We try to be original! Besides, what's the point of ignoring the large part of our community that loves Super Smash Bros. Melee? You should be happy that we are not strictly casual or competitive, but rather a happy union between the two.
...I apologize for the long post. I wish we could just live happily. Why not simply enjoy the picture? ;_;

I can agree on your point on marketing, it's kind of hard to convey my idea without an example that you yourself can relate to, maybe Pikmin being represented by Pikmin 3 is a good example? Maybe Pokemon represented by ORAS? Or I think a good example would be TF2 representing Team Fortress.
Now in respect of that Nintendo Life post, while we both agree on that the site doesn't lean either way really. You need to look at the kind of people that are voting, the runners up 18% of Melee I would argue is the competitive players that read Nintendo Life, where as the 9% for Brawl might be a mix of casuals and the Competitive Brawl Minority.
Specifically my concern about the whole issue is my experience with happening to favor the newest games of the series (I played Melee when I was younger, bought Brawl and loved that as a teen, now at SSB4 and love that as an adult), and being a semi competitive player, people talk nonstop about Melee when they say Smash Bros, this comes from comments, friends, etc. Recently a friend of mine that's still in Highschool told me about a Smash Bros School Club that started up, I dropped by with him one time only to find the group exclusively plays Melee despite representing itself as a Smash Bros Club. Another example is that youtube series called "The Smash Brothers" and once again despite the name focuses 99% of the time on Competitive Melee. So more often than not, whenever people bring up Melee, they typically bring it up to say that it's a 'fact' that Melee is the best game and how it's a 'fact' that Brawl is the worst Smash game.
Given my experience, and given the situation where the picture is a roster of characters, (IMO the best picture would be from SSB4 which has (just about) all of the characters + more and has updated and cleaner art of them, and again, not because it's FROM SSB4 but it has the most characters from all of the games) it sounded to me like a biased post hence the question of it.
And believe me I am happy when groups are actually neutral about games especially Smash Bros but again given the situation that did not seem the case.

While I do not particularly think SSBfurs' reasoning was spot on, this poster is the most accurate "classic" roster, with the exception of ice climbers (god rest their souls). It's old timey with the now-outdated 3D effects and lighting, the flat texture floor, and it's still really epic looking. This is as close of a representation of Smash Bros rise to fame as it gets
I figured they were phased out with Rosalina and Luma taking their place. Entirely different playstyle character, but retaining the temporary companion for potential trick moves and combos.
Okay they are nothing alike. But Ice Climbers isn't getting any newer games neither, iirc, and they aren't nearly as symbolic as Game and Watch or Rob
