During the first hours of Operation Bonite, the Colonel Philippe Erulin, commander of the 2e REP (Régiment Étranger de Parachutistes) of the French Foreign Legion, command his troops from the first line. The rebels took in hotage the civilians of the city of Kowelzi since the 15 may 1978, the 19 May 1978, the 2e REP of the French Army is send on the battlefield for help the Zairian militaries who already tried to freed the town. At 3.30pm the 19/05/78, the 2e REP had land near of the city, the soldiers are welcomed by the enemy fire, less of 20 minutes after the landing of the french soldiers, the entrance of the city were disguaged and two armoured cars are destroyed thanks of bazookas.
The fights will be long of 6 days, it began the 15 may and finished the 21 may.
The losses are of 120 killed and missing soldiers for the Zairian Army, of 5 killed and 6 missing for the French Army and of 1 killed for the Belgian Army and one other for the Moroccan Army, the rebels will lost near of 250 soldiers.
