A few months ago I posted a Work In Progress of Rusty, my aunt Trula's son who passed away back in 1995. It looked pretty bad, honestly...LOL. But, with all the new portrait techniques I've been learning, I decided to redo it. This is just the face of course...I have big plans for the full portrait.
To date, I think this is probably the best human portrait I have created - I know she's gonna love it! She said she will hang it up at the post office (she's the postmaster) when I'm finished. The finished one will be 30x24 inches, so I want it to be as detailed as possible and include many smaller, artistic elements (He loved model cars, had a blue '66 Chevelle, played guitar, and all of these things are going to be painted in some form or another.) From where she displayed the American Idol posters at the office, MANY locals are wanting posters done. She's the best advertisement I could ever have :) Hopefully it'll be a good Christmas this year! I'm the ONLY professional portrait artist for a good 30 miles, so I have the local market cornered...Heheh.
My human portraits are getting better and better with every image, and I've learned techniques to make them quicker, too. The face here was only about 4 hours of work. And thankfully, he doesn't look like he's six years old in this!
What do you all think? I was going for realism, but I still can't shake my somewhat cartoony style. But hopefully, it still looks realistic and the features defined.
Any comments critiques or suggestions are appreciated!

The eyes are focused in different directions, and it looks kind of creepy.
Other than that, the facial structure and shading both look good. If you want the skin to look more realistic, you might want to add more texture to the skin; the shading is very smooth and while it does look fine, skin in real life has a lot of subtle colour variation and texture. You'd be surprised by how much some subtle blemishes and wrinkles can liven up a portrait, without even being noticeable.
I like it, either way. You have a good eye for skin tones and shading.

He had a slightly lazy eye, actually, which is why it seems a bit off. Do you think it is too much? Does it convey as an error in the art, or as a lazy eye?
And thank you for the advice! I'm going to play around with some skin textures over this base, and he also had freckles which I'll have to add in as well as a little birthmark.
I really appreciate your critique! The best way to improve artwork is to listen to the opinions of others, and try new techniques accordingly.

Lol, I was a little worried you were going to say that while I was typing it- the eyes do look realistic in context of that information. I just tend to assume unfocused eyes are errors because I used to do it ALL THE TIME and had to become anal about it, so you can ignore that part.
Good luck on the skin though; It's not necessarily easy to get the hang of. Comparing this to the WIP you mentioned you're obviously rapidly improving, so I'm sure you'll get it.

a model car collector? if you don't know someone who does and can photograph one's collection for you, try one of the various collector magazines, for Hot Wheels for example, or miscellaneous ones. their covers often sport a nicely arranged row of model cars, which can serve as reference.
I would help you out, but I have no means to photograph many models in a row, and in a pro manner. would mostly be Ford models anyway. :)

hard to say... since I'm partial to the Taunus models (aka Cortinak Mk3 and 4) it might be the few models that exist of that model. but there are others, some downright toys, others sophisticated little diecast things... one day I shall photograph them all and display them on the net for other collectors to check out. all I need is a week of time and some host for a galery. XD
Oooh, it would be really cool to see them all! I can't imagine what that many models would look like, all lined up...
You should start a travelling show and go around showing them off as an attraction ^_^
(If you ever do take some pics of them, let me know! I'd love to see!)
