During RainFurrest 2013 I met Marci in-person and commissioned her on the spot. This was during the aftermath of a major hurt and felt I wanted something to reflect my mood and feelings at the time (saddened, but a small glimmer of hope for the future - visible in the twinkle in the eyes of my character).
This was actually the first time I had ever made a commission in-person and my mind instantly flashed-back to a strip of MegaTokyo about the subject of meeting artists in-person: "Can you drew me a sad Hitler in the snow"[1] (a reference to the clichéd setting of sad-looking manga girls sitting outside, crestfallen, in snowy conditions). As I was standing in-front of Marci's table in the artist's alley I quickly image-searched "sad girl in the snow" on my phone and found a drawing of Ayu[2] (from "Kanon") in a pose that I instantly related to.
I chose to have my real-life name on my badge because verily, this isn't my character (who is what I want to be), but is instead my actual self: no-one wants to be sad, but that's how I reacted to life not going the way I had intended.
