A short story based off of my friend
sournote103's great picture, Greaser Poodle .
I hope you all enjoy the story!
“Do you really want to get our hair cut here, Tiran? It looks a bit... shady...” Rerim muttered, the bear glancing around the very shady street they’d entered just to get a haircut. According to Tiran this place had super cheap haircuts according to the website, though the place itself seemed to be placed near a greaser gang. “Are they greasing up that guys hair?” he asked, noting the group of dogs pouring it on.
“Come on, Rerim. It’s a haircut place, let’s just go in and get our haircuts. They’re only a dollar,” the otter urged, and before Rerim could see the dogs continuing to lay on the grease thick he was tugged into the barbers. Outside the group of dogs pulled out another leather jacket as the greased up anthro started to look a bit more like a dog himself...
“Welcome,” the owner of the barbers said, a poodle with very well groomed hair said, smiling as they both walked up. “My name is Jean. I’m the owner, are you two here for a haircut?” They both nodded and he beamed as he slid a clipboard onto the counter with a pen. “Fantastic, why don’t you two sign in and I’ll get the chairs ready.”
“See, Rerim? There’s nothing wrong with this place,” Tiran said, signing his name onto the clipboard as his bear friend did likewise. “We can get some nice haircuts, and then leave before the greasers can see us.”
Shrugging as he finished up his signature, Rerim scratched as his long hair. To be honest the pair should’ve gotten a haircut two weeks prior, but Tiran had been wanting to try out the barbers together. “I guess, but I just want my hair to look good...”
“Don’t worry my friend, your hair is going to look phenomenal. Especially with my new shampoo that I just got a few days ago,” Jean said, leading both of them to their chairs as he pulled out clothes to cover up their bodies from hair. “You two will look absolutely fantastic after I’m done with that hair of yours,” he said, pulling out some scissors and going at Tiran’s hair first as Rerim pulled off his glasses to set on the counter.
Glancing at his blurry reflection, Rerim brushed at it with his fingers as his friend admired the job the poodle seemed to be doing. “Wow... you’re really good,” Tiran laughed, and Jean was appreciating it as he speedily trimmed the otter’s hair, and moved on to Rerim’s own.
“I’ll be trimming your hair first, then I’ll be sliding in some of my new shampoo before finishing you two up,” Jean said, squaring off Rerim’s head in the mirror before setting to work on the bear’s hair. “Very nice and fluffy hair,” Jean admired, Rerim watching Jean’s reflection as he speedily trimmed away his hair.
“Thanks...” Rerim said, kinda nervous that the greasers might come in at some point...
Slipping away once more, Jean was back to Tiran and pulled out a black bottle of hair shampoo. “Now this will go into your hair and help me gel it nicely,” the poodle said, and Rerim heard the splash of goo from the bottle, and assumed that he started on Tiran’s hair. “Nice and greasy,” Jean said, and Tiran sounded confused as he talked to Jean.
“That’s... a bit much... don’t you think?” the otter asked, but his voice actually sounded a bit... off to Rerim. “Actually... that don’t look too bad, rub it in,” Tiran said, and Rerim’s eyes drew together in confusion as he reached forward to grab his glasses.... and found they were missing. “Yeaahhh... nice and greasy,” the otter said, and Rerim tried to look at his friend, and through the blur he swore he saw black hair on his friend’s head, but it was so hard to see...
“Now it’s your turn, bud,” Jean said, but his voice sounded off too, no longer the chipper and happy tone. It was a lower and harsher sounding voice, kinda like how Tiran’s was. Rerim started to stand, but a heavy paw pressed down on his shoulder.
“L... let me go!” Rerim said, struggling to get out of his chair.
“Don’cha worry, bub. Jean’s gonna fix ya up nice,” Tiran said, the otter’s voice was almost completely different, but it was recognizable enough for Rerim to recognize it as his friend. The feeling of cold gel being rubbed into his scalp sent shivers up Rerim’s spine as he saw his own reflection, the gel not only seemed to be slicking his hair up... but turning it black?! “Yeahhh, that’s a nice coatin’.”
Trying to pull out from Tiran’s surprisingly heavy paw, Rerim was shocked when his sight suddenly increased... “Wh... whoa!” he shouted, and blinked as he saw his reflection, and Tiran’s. Tiran didn’t look the same anymore, now he looked more like a poodle, but his hair was black and puffed up into a pompadour. His body posture looked more heavy as he was now wearing a leather jacket, and even Jean looked a lot different now as he had black hair and a leather jacket. The only difference really was that Jean was sporting a pair of shades, and he was the one rubbing in the gel into his hair. “Get off of me! I’m not... what’re you...” Rerim found it getting a bit hard to think... actually the gel didn’t look too bad.... in fact, he made a pretty awesome poodle like that.... “I’m not a poodle...” he grunted, but his eyes were starting to grow heavy as his muzzle pushed out a bit, and his hair grew fluffier and he started to look more and more like a dog.
“Lookin’ good there, Rerim. I think you’re about ready,” Tiran said, smacking him on the shoulder as the bear’s stomach faded away, even his clothes changing as his shirt became white and new jeans appeared on him.
“Yeah... I look cool... though I need more gel,” Rerim said, grinning as he watched Jean gel his hair into a pompadour, essentially making him look like the other two as he slid on a new leather jacket. “Yeah...” he said again, chuckling as Tiran helped him up, the pair slapping each other on the back as they paid up, the rest of the gang sitting outside by their cars.
“Yo, you two ready to do some volunteer huntin’,” the boss asked, a big poodle with even longer hair than any of the others, his pompadour looked fantastic as a matter of fact.
“Yeah, boss,” Rerim and Tiran said, both hopping into a red car, Rerim who had never driven a car before instinctually knew how now, and had them driving out as he pulled on a pair of shades. Pulling up into the cleaner part of town, Tiran directed his fellow greaser to a nearby cat who looked about the right age. “Hey kid, ya need a ride?” Rerim asked, and the cat blinked in confusion.
“I’m... alright...” the cat started, but Rerim stopped him as he pulled down his shades to reveal his brilliant gold eyes that seemed to freeze the cat.
“I just wanna talk to ya, bud. Ya see I’m helping my buds out by finding us some new greasers, and you look perfect for it,” Rerim explained, and the cat dully nodded as he found himself climbing into the car, and as Tiran started to gel us his hair a new more confident smile started to slide onto his face as the feline’s face started to look more canine by the moment.
