Hello, how may I be of service today?
"Ice from the schools med corps reporting for duty! Are you hurt or know anyone else who might be in need of my service? Let me tag along and help!"
Armed with a tommy gun or/and other support weapons and gadgets along with a bag of medical supplies the med corps do not usually fight, but they can provide support fire while providing relief and quick patch up in the middle of a battle.

I am a part of a science fiction fan site which includes a number of military veterans, and I mentioned about what sort of firepower a combat medic can carry.
Officially, a medic is allowed to carry a pistol as it is considered a defensive weapon, not only for the medic himself but for whoever the medic is treating, keeping away wild animals or bandits.
In actual practice. combat medics are typically too loaded down with their equipment to carry even that, and they might grab any nearby weapon if need be.

And here is a story posted on the thread I started:
"Just read a story in the New York State Dental Association News about a dentist who joined the army just before WWII as a soldier. In 1942, the Army caught up with him and transferred him to the Dental Corps. He was in on the invasion of Saipan. He wound up in a forward field hospital caught up in one of the Japanese Banzai charges and defended his hospital with such valor that he was nominated for the Medal of Honor, but it was refused because he was wearing the Red Cross brassard. Eventually it was decided that his actions were not illegal because he was defending his wounded. He died in the action, and the recommendation was neglected until the mmid 1990's. It was awarded in 2002. He had no living relatives and the award was accepted by the dentist who had worked so hard to make the award possible. The dentist, who died in the Saipan invasion, was Dr. Ben Salomon, DDS, may he rest in peace."
