Its a pain in the neck and requires much attention. You can get a satisfying result without such.

many styles can give a fur look without the dreaded fur modifier.

Well Like I said, many methods. Like: make a bunch of planes stacked up on each with a dotted texture to simulate hair. Shadow of the colossus did such. Providing more details in the mohawk also works. To use a Fur modifier you NEED Blender though. A real 3D program.

it only let me save as the programs file sc1 or obj and i couldn't get those to upload here

I'm not sure if its the computer i'm using or i'm just doing it wrong but when i try it makes the file "corrupted"
though even if people can't turn it... I don't think a screen shot hurts anything
