How about "tried-and-true" method that has been proven to work and before you ask about the years of life of the pets I've had, most (both cats and dogs) lived past 14 years old with little need to visit the vet and lived HAPPILY. As "backwards" as it seems, it worked while proper (by your terms) dog-training failed.
They did have their rough-starts (as with any animal), but once they learned the right way, they never forgot.

Methods such as rubbing a dog’s nose in his elimination, putting vinegar in his mouth, or spanking him may only make him hide where he eliminates. It can also cause him to become aggressive toward people or animals of lower status – children, smaller or older pets – or to become so withdrawn and fearful he doesn’t want to be around you and forgets how to play.
Just because your dogs somehow stopped, is not thanks to this method, it's just coincidence. Rubbing the dog's nose in his feces does nothing to teach dog where to properly eliminate. Nor does it enhance the trust or the relationship between the owner and the dog. This will teach your dog to fear you, and he may hide when he has to "go". It’s way too late when dog did it on the floor, and there is no way for your dog to understand why you’re acting the way you are toward him
It is much kinder and efficient to teach your dog the rules of the house proactively via a thorough and clear housetraining program.
Also, bacterias in feces can cause infection of dog's nose, dog can also inhale it so deeply, that it will get to lungs, causing infection which can even kill.
Also - "Tried-and-true"
It's proven that killing human will get rid of all his problems, problems he causes, etc, but normal people dont do this, they use other, way better techniques, that are PROVEN, not "tried and true"
