Original description from VCL, circa 2003:
--For the longest time, Roland's design included a pair of Reebok Classics as his typical shoes. This summer he got an update, seeing as somehow, massive basketball shoes looked better with shorts, and the Converse Weapon got the nod. Later on I bought a pair myself, only to find I got the box colors wrong in the pic. I'll correct the pic someday but for now it's waited long enough to be uploaded (delayed by the blackout and a subsequent computer failure).
Brush inking processed with Micrografx Picture Publisher 8.
Current comments:
Pretty much everything about the pic is covered in the above desc. I don't have those sneakers anymore (their design causes an ugly-looking Z-bend crease to develop where the toe flexes, and I lost interest in them). If I had drawn this pic today, I would have doubtless put him in a pair of white-on-white Air Force I sneakers, as they're as common as dirt here in NYC. Considering its age, this is one of the better-looking works I've done of Roland, possibly the best one to reach this state of completion. The reference to a blackout was probably the big Northeast blackout of a few years ago.

Thank you!
For some reason, footwear is the first thing I learned to draw correctly, somewhere in junior high school. I kept doing it since I know of no other artists what either can or bother to do it. So, it's one more thing to make my characters stand out :)
(although they can appear barefoot too--with the exception of Nei'chelle, it tends to be a all-or-none condition when more than one of my characters is present in a given pic)

At the time I drew this, I hadn't done such a thing with this character. While writing this comment I hadn't looked up at the pic and thought you were talking about this pic, since the suggestion came up there that he muddy those shoes. But more on that later. In fact, rather than post a long-winded response here, drop a comment on the submission I linked and...I'll post the long-winded comment there
