It's porphyrin. It secretes for a number of different reasons, most notably illness or stress.

ive seen porphyrin this looks slightly different then what my rats had

I feed a mixture of dog food, rat muesli, mealworms, dry pasta, cereal, dried fruit, banana chips, pumpkin seed, sunflower seed and linseed. I mix it up myself - and it's poryphrin - mostly likely because he's a double rex and more easily irritated in his eyes.

as long as the muesli doesnt have dried corn im happy :3 im a stickler with it cuz it gives rats cancer cooked corn is fine but raw or dry is awful

I only give mine cooked veg - normally whatever we have left. They get extra tonight - the turkey crown carcass to strip apart.

i give mine raw for most of it but ive done my research to learn what has to be cooked for them :3 altho ive never tried meal worms before

I just mixed dried throughout their tub - it works better that way as they have a constant protein source. They get turkey, gammon, brussels, broccoli and carrots tonight.

Poor guy. I got a patchwork male last month as a rehabilitation rattie (doing amazing btw and the sweetest little guy ever) and I've not seen his eyes get irritated yet... Maybe it's because he's got more fur on his face? His fur is mostly on his face and on his rump, with teeny bits elsewhere. The fur on his bottom makes it look like he's wearing shorts

It could be an allergy - but more likely to be genetic as one of his brothers does the same.

Oh no :( Could it be detergent at all? I use this detergent called Ecos, and you can find it at Walmart. It's like... $9, but I've been using it since 2012 and we've not had any respiratory issues since I made that switch in 2012 from regular stuff. I've found that anything with a scent irritates my ratties systems in some way, so there's nothing scenty in my apt >.< I won't let my man use his cologne in the same part of the place or sit around near the ratties with it on, and I won't use my deodorant in the apt until I'm in a different part of the place and about to leave, or when I get to work >.<
