Thumbnailing is probably the most important step. Get a good pose and the rest of the picture falls into place pretty easily, bearing in mind basic construction and skill.
On this one I tried using some gradients rather than paint bucket, and I think it came out a lot nicer from that subtle texture.

I don't even know what a line tester is!

Maybe. I really need to make a proper portfolio soon actually, I have a bunch of stuff but havn't compiled it ^^;
A line tester is basically an adjustable arm on a flat surface with a peg, that holds up a camera. You use it to scan in drawings for animation without it flickering everywhere,
