Burke's purpose on this voyage is relatively straightforward: he's hoping to start up a mining operation on whatever worlds Dr. Cross's team deems habitable. So far, he's been hard-pressed to find a single success, which has only made him more desperate. His job may very well depend on the potential success of this last world.

Burke isn't an explorer, nor is he much of a team player. His obsession with success, coupled with his ego and self-centered nature, leads him to be highly unpopular with the crew. Some wonder if he would trade his soul to get ahead in the business world.
