Photoshop is so powerful that I needed to reduce it to force myself to be intentional, rather than relying on brushes, filters, and other digital gimmicks.
I've restricted my aims like this in other ways, too:
I spent mostl of 2007 using ballpoint, no pencil.
In 2013 up to present, I traditionally paint almost exclusively in greyscale or monochrome.
Alchemy is just… it's basic. If you do good work in Alchemy, you feel like you're immortal or something. That program took me a few years to understand.
Short answer: I avoid overwhelming elements until I prove to myself I can handle them tastefully.

Thanks for answering! I might have to give the ballpoint a shot. I really rely on the lack of permanence in digital and pencil and i could probably benefit from becoming more deliberate. I should probably do more excercises in general, ive been lazy this year as far as doing anything that resembles actual work ha.
Photoshop really is something else though. Ive gotten to the point where i really only use one brush, but the texture thing really had me in the beginning. I wanted to put textures on ALL the things and it did...and it was terrible lol. If there's one thing Ive learned about PS its "just because you can, doesnt mean you should"
I dont think im ready for alchemy yet ha, i say you using it in stream once and i was like, but how?? It was really cool though. I kinda get what you mean after seeing it in action.
