Finished piece for

I really need to get better equipment for taking pictures.
I tried to paint this piece to make him look back lit by the sunset. It was a tough effect, and one that is kind hard to tell in person because even though it's painted like it's back lit, there are real shadows. It dampens the effect.
Unpainted version
I wasn't really paying attention to how long this took, but I'm going to guess in the 12-15 hour range.

Cool! To eliminate shadows, simply use more lights around the object. With more lights though, try to disperse the light as evenly as possible. With small objects like this it isn't a big deal, but with larger objects sometimes pointing two lights near the shadowed area instead of directly at it will keep away a "hot" spot in the picture. If you use a flash at all and it appears to focus the light too much on one spot you can make a cheap diffuser by taping tracing paper to the flash. I understand wax paper will also work, though I've never tried it myself.
My webcam is my only means of taking photos, and it's alright at best. I only have one desk lamp to try to move light around for photos, and I've gotten pretty good at that! It's off in this picture which just leaves my overhead light. That got a lot of shadow out of the picture.
Unfortunately, that problem exists in person as well as in the photo. If I turn the piece in my hands, shadows move over parts that should be shiny. It's distracting.
