In a way, I don't think it's so sad! It means Abel's story has come to a natural close, he won't be dragged out past his prime like a very sad dancing bear with a ring in his nose! Plus, I like to think about how his story has affected other characters in the universe... And thus, his legacy continues! At least, that's one way to look at it
