"I didn't think you were ready, but you are. I knew it when I saw you with HIM...You tell yourself that it's love, but it isn't. It's blood. Death. You can't escape the nightmare without me. And I can't escape without you. I've waited a long time for you...I searched for you for so long, from one foster home to another. We can live together as mates. Just as our parents did. You do know that they were brother & sister, don't you?...Long ago, our ancestors sacrificed their children to the leopards. The souls of the children grew inside the leopards, until the leopards became human...We are an incestuous race. We can only make love with our own; otherwise, we transform. And before we can become human again, we must kill."
Remakes aren't generally known for being as good as the original films, or even half-as-good, in many cases. Now, as a film buff with an open mind & a tendency to be easily-pleased with what she sees, I must admit that although I am usually more of a sequel-lover, there are also a number of remakes that I greatly like &/or love, even when most other people hate or dislike them. A few examples of my favorite remake films include (but are not limited to) the 2007 "Hairspray" musical film, the "Pink Panther" remake starring Steve Martin & Kevin Kline, the remakes of "The Parent Trap" & "The Shaggy Dog", & the 1982 remake of "Cat People".
The very latter one is, by far, one of my most favorite remakes--if not *the* most. I first learned about the film on the unofficial Malcolm McDowell website, where there was an informational page dedicated to "Cat People", in which Malcy played a significant role (see below for more details); the review of the movie wasn't very favorable, as it turned out, but that didn't deter me from buying the DVD & watching it. The moment I saw it, just as with all the other films I've seen, I became *hooked*! Now I not only watch the DVD frequently, but I also own & constantly listen to the soundtrack (with very beautiful music provided by Giorgio Moroder), read the transcript online (alas, it's a closed-caption transcript, but at least I'm able to remember who the lines belong to!), & have just begun using the movie as inspiration for various poems, fanfic drabbles, & fanart, including the one you see on this page--which just so happens to be my first piece of artwork for the "Cat People" fandom.
Now, before I discuss the picture itself, first let me provide a quick, spoiler-free summary of "Cat People", for those of you who are interested in seeing it:
Paul Schrader's retelling of the horror classic "Cat People" is set in the surrealistic, sensual scenery of early-80's New Orleans. A beautiful brunette teenager, Irena Gallier (played by the always-lovely Nastassja Kinski), arrives at the local airport & is taken to the home of her long-lost brother Paul (played by Malcolm McDowell); the girl is staying with Paul & finally getting to know him after being separated from him for almost her whole life. Paul & his housekeeper (played by Ruby Dee) welcome Irena into their home with open arms; Irena, meanwhile, is also having a grand time getting used to life in the big city, with its entertaining attractions & its charming tourist sites. But Paul is hiding many secrets...And also, during Irena's sleepy nights at her brother's flat, Paul is lurking in her moonlit room, watching her lustfully from her bedside...
Not too long after her arrival, Irena gets a job at the New Orleans zoo. She is particularly drawn to the zoo's big cats & a beautiful, but dangerous, black panther in particular. She is shown around the place by the charming, caring zookeeper Oliver (John Heard) & his assistant Alice (Annette O'Toole). Irena quickly becomes attracted to Oliver, & the two begin a loving affair, but Paul has other plans for Irena...plans that could change their seemingly-"sibling" relationship--& their lives--forever...
The title for the fanart, "See These Eyes So Green", came from a line in the movie's famous end-credits song, performed by rock legend David Bowie. Additionally, a pair of green cat's eyes glare out at the viewer from the bottom of the picture; that was also inspired by the line in the song that I used for the name of the picture. Another part of the picture--the half of a face with a glaring green eye--was inspired by the promotional poster for the film, but to make it a little more in-line with the movie, I changed the face from that of Irena's to a black panther's instead, & added the blood dripping from its mouth & fangs to demonstrate the macabre feeling of the film. The last part of the picture--& the part I enjoyed doing the most--was inspired by a scene from the movie in which Paul stands behind Irena & attempts to seduce her in the hopes that she will "mate" with him & "save" them both from the curse of their ancestors, the dreaded Cat People; in the artwork, however, Irena freezes & stares ahead with wide, frightened eyes as she is forced to face the fears that consume her each night & to confront the uncertain future that lies in store for her...now that she has discovered the terrible Gallier family secret...
As far as my visual portrayals of Irena & Paul go, I tried to make them wear the same outfits that they used in the film, if not with slightly-different colors; additionally, I made them have similar hair colors to those that they had in the film. However, I also took some personal (or should I say "fursonal"?) liberties with Paul's & Irena's appearances in the fanart; the most obvious of these is that I turned them into anthro mice, since I didn't quite feel comfortable enough to draw them in human style. Also, while Paul's fur color is more like the skin-tone he had in the movie, I gave Irena's fur a whitish color to bring out the innocence & initial purity of the character.
Overall, I'm very proud of this fanart--or what I've done of it so far. It's not *quite* finished yet; I still have to clean up the places where the lineart shows up against the black background, along with some spots in certain areas that I failed to color in / clean up earlier, & I also want to add in some shading & highlighting, along with some other cool effects. So hang tight for updates! ^_^
