Pierre and The Red dragon
He found himself knee deep in a bale of hay in what appears to be a barn, with animals in box stalls. A horse and cow nearby look at him gloomily. Brushing the hay off his clothes, he walks to the barn's door and peeks outside.
Seven huge towers rose up nearby with walkways winding up them and lighted windows To the East lies a vast bay, with cliffs at its furthest point. Surrounding the towers is a ring of clear land and beyond that a vast silent forest. He could hear running, people shouting and yelling and roars.
“Roars?” he wondered what could be making them.
A shadow soared past one of the windows, something huge. The towers are suddenly illuminated by floodlights, throwing them into sharp detail.
Dragons! A swarm of dragons circles the huge towers. The people in the towers and walkways are throwing ropes at the dragons; occasionally lassoing one, but the dragons always seemed to be one step ahead; another would swoop down and gnaw through the rope or else the roped dragon would pull away, dragging the people holding to the rope with them.
Worse still was coming. From the sea, huge serpents slid onto the shore and began winding their way up the towers. From the nearby forest, huge bipedal reptiles lumbered up and started climbing the towers, along with more flying beasts with wings that looked vaguely humanoid, aside from the long snouts and scaly skin. And even more swarms of strange creatures emerged from every direction he could see.
The fighting was fierce, but it seemed as though the monsters weren't aiming to destroy the people. The dragons and flying beasts snatched people and threw them into the shallows of the sea or onto the ground, where they lie unconscious or winded. The giants pushed the humans aside as though they were made of feathers and the snakes coiled around people tripping them over and winding them.
A growl came from somewhere behind him. Spinning round he sees a four legged lizard like creature skulking towards him, a head higher than him with dull orange scales, blazing blue eyes and a long horn at the end of its snout.
He ran as fast as he could towards the tower town, all the while hearing the thudding footsteps of the beast behind him. Rounding a building he quickly ducks behind a stack of crates and barrels that smelled strongly of fish and salt. The beast skidded to a halt next to the crates, sniffs the air briefly and then runs over to the towers.
From his hiding place, he could see the towers more clearly; at the very top of each tower is a lighthouse. The battle seems almost futile. Five dragons start pushing at the top of one of the towers which falls with a huge splash into the ocean shallows. He could also see the people more closely. They wore plain green or blue jerkins and caps and they looked exhausted; with sallow faces and eyes ringed with purple shadows.
He is distracted by the clattering of claws up on the roof. Looking up he sees one of the winged beasts. Up close it looked like a person. Its hands were like that of a human's except clawed and with only three fingers. But its face was fierce, with a long beak like mouth, two horns, a long tawny mane and pale green scales.
Creeping slowly away from the creature, he sneaks into the building behind him. Inside is a shambled mess of more crates and rusting equipment. Beyond lies a dry dock with a number of steam ships moored. Rummaging through a crate he finds several grey spheres with fuses on them, along with lighting flint. An idea pops into his mind.
Peaking out of the shack, he takes out one of the bombs and lights it's fuse. Just as a giant reptile lumbers past, he throws the bomb at it. It explodes with a loud bang and a huge cloud of smoke. The reptile cries out, more in fear than pain and other beasts close by stop fighting and flee.
Lighting more of the bombs he throws them as high as he could. The air fills with bangs and smokes, startling the creatures who retreated back to the darkness of the forest. The humans rush out from their towers, cheering and jeering at the fleeing creatures.
The last few creatures reach the edge of the forest and look back. One was a huge red bulky dragon with a light orange underbelly, four horns on its head, a long whiplash tail ending with a diamond shaped spike and glowing yellow eyes and nostrils. With him are the flying creature and a large snake with a green diamond pattern down its back, along with other creatures further back.
Perhaps it was a trick of the light, but they looked sad. But before he could get a closer look, they turned and left.
The humans from the tower were ignoring him. A man with a decorated hat and tunic, was speaking proudly to rapt attention from the others.
“Thanks to my brave and daring intellect, those beasts will never ever attack us again!” he pauses for applause. “And now we can strike back! And then all the riches will be ours!”
“Excuse me, but what riches?” asks the boy, speaking for the first time.
Annoyed glares flickered his way and he shrinks back nervously.
“Have you any idea how many doubloons and silver pieces the skins of those beasts are worth? Or their horns and eggs? Ahh, profit!” says the captain, looking to the forest and his vision seemed glazed
“But that's horrible!” the boy says, aghast “Its murder.”
“Time to rest,” the captain continues, ignoring him and looking out to sea, where the sun was beginning to rise “Return to your towers, We attack at night.”
“You sleep during the day?” the boy asks a sailor in a blue jerkin.
“Of course,” the sailor replies, rubbing his eyes wearily, “Those things always attack during the night. Now go away.”
They move away, leaving him alone.
After a quick check to make sure no one was watching him, he runs out of the town, heading for the forest.
Inside the forest, the air smelt fresh and cool. Dawn light was creeping through the branches and trunks, casting shadows across the mossy ground. He picks his way through roots, stumbling occasionally.
A twig snaps. He freezes, eyes scanning around him.
Suddenly the red dragon he saw earlier melts into existence from the shadows. He backs away from the dragon, but he backs into something else, something scaly. Before he knew it, he was lifted into the air by a huge hand. The reptile that had seized him had spikes running from its nose, down its back and tail and was a mossy green colour with bright yellow eyes. It sniffs him and then speaks in a gravelly voice:
“What is this human doing here?”
The winged beast he had seen earlier lands on the giant's wrist and studies him carefully.
“He's not like the tower dwellers,” the beast says “Wonder what its called.”
“Please, my name is Pierre. I need to warn you, those people are going to try and attack you.”
The creatures glance at each other then scrutinise Pierre. Then the red dragon speaks:
“Lets take him to the nest.”
The nest is a clearing between three massive mountains. Large holes at the base of the nearest mountain lead underground. From them, more creatures emerge to meet them. Suspicious eyes glowered at Pierre. The giant holding him, drops him to the ground and then sits down nearby. The dragon and winged beast loomed over Pierre.
“What were you doing with the tower dwellers?” asks the dragon
“I was hiding, one of you was chasing me,” says Pierre “And then I found some explosives and-”
“You mean you were the one who ruined our attack?” the dragon growls. The other creatures tensed and made noises of anger.
“But you were trying to kill them! I couldn't just sit there and let you do that!” Pierre shouts.
“Kill?” the winged beast says “We don't want to kill the tower dwellers, we want them to go away and leave us alone. We fight because we must.”
“They used to attack us every day,” the dragon explains “So we attack them at night, so they can stop sneaking up on us while we leave our nest.”
“Its not been easy,” a snake hisses “We can't rest or gather food properly and we're tiring fast.”
The creatures bow their heads, looking utterly devastated. Pierre looks around at their faces. His expression hardens.
“Well then, you have to attack them again!” he says.
“Now?” one of the dragons cries out sound incredulous.
“Why not? They're all asleep now and you're stronger than them. You can chase them out for good,” he starts pacing, the creatures watching him with rapt fascination. “You can sneak up on them and take them by surprise and....erm, oh! There's probably more ebombs in that storehouse I hid in, we can use those and-”
“Who died and made him leader?” the winged creature whispers to the dragon.
“I think you'd be best for getting those bombs,” Pierre tells the winged creature, who looks surprised and irritated.
“And why should I take orders from you?” the beast asks with a growl.
“Listen to him,” says the dragon and then to Pierre “I think we can trust you, even though you're a human.”
“Even though I'm just a human?” Pierre repeats, raising an eyebrow “What does that mean?”
The dragon blinks and glances at the giant, who shrugs.
“Erm, well we haven't ever met a human who didn't scream,” the dragon mumbles, but then his tone lightens and he gives a toothy grin, which made him look funny “But where are our manners, we haven't introduced ourselves properly!”
Pierre gave the dragon a quizzical look but allowed him to change the conversation.
“I am Jacobi,” the dragon says, pointing to himself “This is Ossl,” he points to the giant that had carried Pierre, who waves and smiles happily. “And this grumpy fellow is Thrazzi.” he pats the winged creature on the shoulder who grunts and looks away.
“Its nice to meet you all,” Pierre says “I'm sorry for scaring you off with those bombs.”
“Don't worry about it now,” Jacobi replies, with a warm smile. “We'll gather at the edge of the forest while you go with Thrazzi.”
Thrazzi meanwhile was perched on a tall rock. He had called up some other winged creatures, but glowers at Pierre as the boy clambers up the rock.
“Don't think that we're all close friends now because Jacobi trusts you,” he says “One sign of betrayal and I'll be your nightmare.”
Pierre gulps nervously.
“You can't fly, so you're going to have to ride on my back,” Thrazzi growls “So don't tug on my mane, I won't like it.”
Pierre wraps his arms around Thrazzi's shoulders and hooks his legs across the creature's body. He gives Thrazzi a weak smile, which quickly fades when he Thrazzi shoots him a witheringly look.
Flexing his wings, he jumps from the rock and swoops upwards into the sky, followed by the other creatues.
Higher and higher they climbed, pushing through the forest canopy and into open air. The wind was cool and smelt fresh and the sun shone.
They soon reached the town. The other winged creatures, each holding a shiny stone swooped over to the towers and landed on roofs or balconies. Thrazzi flies over to the storehouse and lands outside the door. Pierre slides from his back and they both peer cautiously around.
“So far so good,” comments Pierre “Now lets go find those explosives.”
Pierre rumages again through the storehouse boxes, while Thrazzi keeps watch at the door. One of the creatures shines its stone at the storehouse.
“There's someone coming, quick hide!” Thrazzi whispers, pushing Pierre into the shadows. Both crouch behind barrels as the door to the storehouse opens and a man stumbles in. He looks exhausted and takes out a lamp. The light fills the building and Thrazzi and Pierre's hiding place is illuminated. Acting quickly before, Thrazzi grabs Pierre and wraps his wings around them both. The man turns and peers bleary eyed at the barrels.
Thrazzi and Pierre hardly dare to move as he comes closer, peering at the 'barrel' that was Thrazzi's wings. The man pokes the strange barrel and is surprised at how soft it feels. Dropping the lamp, he backs away and then starts to dash for the door!
Thrazzi lunges at the man and knocks him out with his tail.
“Well, I hope I could have avoided that,” Thrazzi mutters, “You ok?” he asks Pierre who looked shocked, who merely nods. Thrazzi ruffles his hair to try and cheer him up.
Soon Pierre climbs back onto Thrazzi's back, carrying three small containers of smoke bombs. They flew to the edge of the forest. As they touchdown, the creatures emerge from hiding.
“Did you get them?” Jacobi asks
Pierre holds up the boxes as an answer. All the creatures and Pierre take one each.
“The plan is to throw these into every level of the towers. That'll get them terrified. Ready?”
All the creatures nod and move quietly to the towers, Pierre clambering onto the back of a dragon as it takes off.
At the very top of the centre tower, the leader was slumbering fitfully in his bed. His quarters are decorated with maritime objects like buoys and nets. A shadow slides the room and something flies through the open latticed window and lands on the bed next to him, hissing ominously. The man turns and nuzzles against it.
“Is someone there?” he mutters, opening his eyes, “Oh no...”
BANG! The bomb explodes with a cloud of thick white smoke. The leader stumbles out of the room and out onto the tower ramparts. It was utter pandemonium; smoke billowed from every window and door of the towers and people ran from the towers. The smoke drifts across the grounds around the tower. The smoke was so thick that the humans stumbling out of the buildings couldn't see their assailants. The leader rushes out and yells:
“Retreat! To the ships, we shall leave this wretched place!”
The humans scurry to the dry docks and climb into their paddle boats and rush to get the boilers working. Soon the ships are crammed with hunters and push off out to the open sea. The creatures cheer in joy.
Pierre and his dragon land nearby. Pierre dismounts and thanks the dragon, before rejoining Jacobi, Thrazzi and Ossl.
“Do you think they'll come back?” Pierre asks Jacobi.
“Maybe,” the dragon answers “But we will be ready for them if they do.”
They watch the smoke from the ships grow smaller and smaller as they fade into the distance.
“And I found myself in here,” says Pierre.
He had taken Jacobi, Thrazzi and Ossl to the barn he had arrived in.
“It was here.” Pierre continues running to the back of the barn and the piles of hay, the animals looking nervous at Ossl and Jacobi. Ossl opens their box stalls and they dash out of the barn.
“Bye bye!” Ossl calls after them waving a huge hand.
The others meanwhile are shoving aside the hay bales.
“I've found something!” Jacobi cries out.
Beneath a pile of hay is a glowing purple speck, like a grain of sand. Jacobi picks up between his index claw and thumb and holds it up to his eye.
“Jacobi I don't think-” says Thrazzi, but it was too late.
The purple grain became a huge portal and was sucking Jacobi in! Pierre grabs Jacobi's tail but then finds himself being pulled in as well. Ossl grabs Pierre's legs and Thrazzi grabs Ossl's tail.
All four find themselves falling and spiralling in a limbo of swirling colours and indistinguishable shapes, not knowing where they will land...
