A first look at one of the weapons you'll see in the Dark Origin comic.
The Directed Laser Weapon Model 38 (M-38) is a military-grade energy carbine.
Utilizing the power of focused energy beams, the M-38 fires twin lasers at its target. Perfect accuracy and zero recoil allow even the most incompetent marksman a good chance of scoring a hit. Rate of fire is limited to one dual-blast of laser energy at a time, in order to prevent overheating the barrel and other components. Concentrated laser fire will burn through most armor types, although certain substances will deflect or absorb the energy blasts.
The M-38's battery is located under the weapon, and can also function as a handhold to increase stability. It last for up to 200 shots, although there are extended batteries that can increase the weapon's firing capacity. The power level remaining is displayed on the right and left sides of the gun in the form of a long strip near the upper rail. If need be, the weapon can be temporarily overcharged to deliver a more powerful energy blast, at the expense of heavy battery drain.
Lastly, the M-38 can be set to self-destruct by manually overloading the battery. This will result in full weapon detonation, causing shrapnel damage; the explosion will affect anything within a three-meter radius. The time delay until detonation is around five seconds.
While ideal for military use due to its low cost and minimal ammunition requirements, the M-38 has three critical weaknesses. The first is the battery and internal mechanism's sensitivity to EMP, which can temporarily or even permanently disable the weapon. The second is that the laser beams cauterize wounds, preventing a target from bleeding out, and thus allowing an enemy to keep attacking if not critically injured. A third weakness is that each blast of laser energy creates a visible line leading back to its source, betraying the position of the wielder. A possible fourth weakness exists: the M-38 is theoretically capable of firing a single continuous blast, which will overheat the weapon. Overheating will require cool down time, but could potentially result in the weapon self-destructing due to the extreme amount of heat.
