I can't say I am a fan of the new movie. Couldn't even finish watching it. But.. I've wondered that too. The 2003 cartoon showed them crafting weapons. Even in the original comics, their weapons looked funky, and not main stream. Not sure if that's just lack of ability in drawing them properly, or intentional, but it could help lend support for that they made their own weapons. You don't have to be a master to make a functional weapon. :)
