Its actually 6 separate layers as an .XCF format using GiMP. the colors are called plasma cloud rendering, you can seed completely random color patterns, or get creative an specify the pattern like I've done here.
And yeah I know what you mean, this was more or less a rough sketch I decided to color. my true finished work has more attention to detailing.
