Now to cut it out and find a bag, and I'm set for MFF! I should hope.

I don't know where I'll be tomorrow, I'll definitely be wandering around.
I can note you a phone number if you promise to delete it immediately... just to rendezvous.
Shit, your production of Trovatore wasn't the one on the 29th, was it? If so, we missed meeting again.

You'll have to tell me how Stephanie Blythe's "Stride La Vampa" came out, my judgement is clouded by this piece of pond scum sitting behind me whose cell went off. (Funnily, I saw both her and Andrea Silverelli (Ferrando) in "Walküre" in Seattle last year, I'm convinced Silverelli's following me around with his voice like a jug... She was Fricka, he was Hunding. (The program notes in the "Trovatore" booklet incorrectly says he was Hagen.))
Isn't perspective fun? It's super fun. (I'm quite tall, so I imagine this is how it'd look at eye height while I wear it...)
The worst part is that it's doubled perspective, so the fold of the top of the paper mustn't line up with the letters. So here's to calculating those on the fly!

I concur, it's always tough on the wallet. Luckily I have some disposable income from scraping paint, otherwise this and christmas shopping would have fucked me over.
Me being a Con virgin, wish me luck! I always head for Michgan during the thanksgivings if I can, but now that they've changed the date I can finally make it!! Huzzah! I'll let you know how it went!

With their pitiful whine? Eep. I gave this a few touch ups and got it laminated, now I have something for future cons.
Lovely experience! Between registration, food, and my inability to stop buying prints, I got a nice assortment. I'm not used to spending money at all, so it disorients me. It's also just nice in the dealer's area, feeling the art collide around the room; and everywhere else, for once being the most handsome of them all.
You'd be nicely surprised that Sofawolf Press' dealer table had a nice selection of Tess Garman's original sketches for sale.
Not that I could afford them, but I still got to gaze a bit and study how she carves her pencil and everything... and I got into a nice discussion about book cover designs. Their biggest gripe is that the artists simply don't leave room for the title and author and everything. "Green Gypsy" or whatever it was, that Rukis did for Kyell, that gave them so much headache trying to fit the words in. They haven't used papyrus in years, he tells me, only for someone to point out a book with it. XD They recommended I make a small handout on book-cover graphic design, which I would probably do pro bono if it would stem this tide of poor design. Who knows? I can recommend my loves of distinct periods of book design (like Chinese '80s or MIT publications) and see a difference...

Nice you liked it! Apparently you were able to keep your reluctance towards crowds at bay
Getting an original from Tess Garman sounds like a great opportunity. What where they asking for them? And I'm a fan of ranking lists "most terrible book covers of all times", there are sure a lot of them XD It seems indeed that artists, despite their skills on their field, have a hard time getting their head around what makes for a good book cover. Besides leaving space for title and author name, the most important aspect is to make a potential buyer want to pick the book up and browse through it, or even buy it just from that. I sure did that in the past, and was more than once disappointed that the flashy action Sci-fi cover art hid a boring piece of tripe (I'm looking at you, Dan Simmons XD). I guess it served its purpose from the sales standpoint, though.
Your description gave me appetite visiting a con myself, to be honest. I might go to Berlin next year for Eurofurence, come to think of it

That's the thing - crowds are worst when I'm at the same level as them. This hotel had the entire area split up into various floor levels, many many rooms, so there was never enough of anyone in one place to trigger me. Serendipitous!
$80 for sketches, $150 for those little painted icon tiles. I only have a couple of originals in my bag, most of them small pieces from artists whose techniques I love, the rest are prints.
You can do more with witty graphic design than you can with a full-on color portrait of the characters. I, given a choice, would have the character images on the back, under the description, and an actual witty cover - abstract or stylized, with the title and author as a part of the design - the kind that wouldn't scream "furry" if you took them to the beach. Kyell Gold may be the Stephen King of this fandom, but even his book covers are a shot in the dark.
Hell, I should doodle some concepts!
I'm a nerd for those old Pulp magazine covers - they had a whole science of how to sell with a single bold-ass image.
Good luck if you do so! Glad to inspire.
