I was doodling this and wanted to kind of develop something a little different. I softened up the facial features to give this character a more anime/cartoony feel.

I do believe you succeeded in the goal of a manga/anime feel, although that is a pretty broad range nowadays what with all the source material.
You note you just don't feel there's life and energy to it. Is this due to the poses, or not finding a sense of 'leaping off the page' when you look at it? Just curious, since to me it feels pretty darn dynamic. Sure, she's not leaning at a 45 degree angle with the camera overhead while she talks in a William Shatner monolog, but that could be a bit excessive that way. :)
