Before the second contact with humans, it(and any vocabularies that carry the meaning "human" or "man" in other human languages that were introduced to them as well) used to mean themselves. The notion changed into the latter only sometime after the second contact with humans. On the other hand, words for dog, wolf, and any other canine animals except fox were either deemed as to be names for fictional or legendary animals, or got their meaning changed to denote other kinds of mammals, as canine creatures, other than themselves, did not exist on the planet.
