Howard Cruse's 1980s comic page "Wendel,' in The Advocate... Verbose, acidic, unhurried, devastatingly farcial, and a landmark in gay comics history (Alison Bechdel testifies that this is the strip that gave her the courage to write "Dykes to Watch Out For," so we all owe him for that).
Wendel, the unflappable ginger everykid, his boyfriend and circle of friends, and his adventures around the torrid gay community. Every annoying gay-in-the-eighties thing to happen happens... The books he can't find in the lgbt bookstores turn up in church bonfires, the oddly specific personal ad he responds to turns out to be his mom luring him home for dinner, that sort of thing. Highly recommended, the entire run of the strip's available in book form. And every single panel is hand-lettered and made with an elaborate stippling technique, it makes your hand ache just looking at it. Simply divine.
