“You’re sure you want to do this, Lyn?”
“I am, Nick. I don’t want to keep this going. We have to show her you’re not the bogeyman of her nightmares.” The green dragoness replied with a serious look.
Nick gently stroked the slightly swollen belly of his companion, thoughtful. After their little morning nap together, during which she had kept her newborn Trinara inside her all along, Lynara had decided to put an end to the tensed situation at home. Her baby was afraid of the one she loved, and she had insisted to rush the moment the hatchling would realize she had nothing to be scared of. And for this intent, she wanted to arrange a meeting.
The young human wasn’t sure this was a good idea, given how the baby dragon had reacted the previous time. The two of them had discussed the subject for quite a long time, until the end of the afternoon, actually. But he had finally agreed, trusting the mother instincts of his beloved dragoness
He got out of the living room, watching her starting to gag in a familiar way from the corner of the hall.
The cradle of flesh wiggled around her, making the baby dragoness waking up with a giggle. It was so funny to be here, with all the weird sounds of mother’s body and the muscles that contracted gently on her from time to time. But now, it was apparently time to go; the grasp of the flesh and the sounds were heavier, at least heavy enough to make her body shift. If mother had decided to get her out, it probably meant that the dangerous human was gone. Mother was so strong! She hoped she would be as brave as her one day, fighting evil humans who would want to hurt her.
The soft insides pressed her upward, but that only made the baby dragon laugh. It was so funny when mommy did that! She had already experienced that once, but it still was really amusing to go back from where she came. Some games would never get boring!
A tighter flesh grabbed her muzzle, sucking her up. She was somehow proud that her mother had so powerful muscles; it made her feel protected. It didn’t take long until her little body was entirely dragged into the mother dragon’s throat. It felt like a big hug… she squeaked happily from the warm feeling that embraced her.
Mother was about to hiccup; she knew it. She did that the last time she wanted to expel her out of her throat. And this was a funny little bump the hatchling waited impatiently. Aaaaand here it was! With a gag, mother pushed her out, and the baby dragon slid easily on her soft tongue. She landed on a big and careful paw while the rest of her got out as well.
This surely was her favorite game! With a big smile on her little face, she observed her mother cleaning her mouth with her tongue, before lowering her benevolent eyes on her and putting her on the ground.
“Are you alright, Trinara?”
“Of course mommy!” She squeaked happily.
“Good…” The mother dragon purred, rubbing affectionately her muzzle against her baby. “Trinara, there’s someone I’d like to introduce you.”
“Really? Who’s this?” She asked excitedly, eager to meet another dragon. This place was human built, but after all, it seemed that this was dragon territory. These were some reassuring news!
“Nick? Can you come?” The dragoness called, turning her head toward the entrance of the room.
Weird, this name seemed familiar… but it wa probably her imagination.
Trinara’s eyes were focused on the opening too. This had to be where the new dragon would appear, she was so impatient! But then she heard footsteps… There wasn’t any noise of claw, and it seemed too light to be a dragon… There were also the sound of only two legs… these were human footsteps! She hoped she was wrong; she wished it so hard!
But when the new entrant appeared, she realized that she was awfully right… This was a human…
And not any human! She didn’t know if he could differentiate humans, but she was certain that this was the one that also lived in this place… for he had scared her twice already!
“Hello Trinara. I’m Nick. Nice to meet you.” he spoke revealing his teeth. This was a threat! She stepped back, but her mother held her back.
“No, don’t worry.” She spoke with a smile. “He won’t do you any harm, he just wants to meet you.”
She looked at her mother’s eyes, but she looked sincere… Her mother believed what she said… Why? All humans were dangerous! Maybe… Maybe he had corrupted her to think the opposite! Maybe the evil human had tortured her, or even enslaved her to obey his wishes! She thought she was safe here, protected by her mother, but she was actually within the most dangerous place she could be in!
She wasn’t safe; she had to get out of this!
She quickly glanced around, thinking quick to escape. Following the dying sunray in the room with her eyes, the baby dragon spotted it. An exit! There was an opening in the walls, with a strange mechanism probably meant to close it. It was transparent, so maybe its use was to let dragon prisoner see the outside world without letting them out, to better torture them. But here was this evil human’s mistake, he had let it open!
Struggling nervously, she managed to escape the paw the held her back, and dashed to this exit.
“Trinara no!” her mother shouted, incapable to stop her in time.
The hatchling cried; leaving her mother here was heartbreaking! But she had no choice, the poor dragoness had been mind washed by this dangerous human! So she had become dangerous for her too! Ignoring the scream of her mother, she jumped right through the opening, getting her freedom back.
“Trinara!” Lyn screamed once again, totally panicked, calling for her baby with the full capacity of her lungs.
Nick didn’t know what to do, and he was somehow relieved that his beloved companion couldn’t see him hesitate… His simple appearance had made the hatchling run away. In his shoes, some dragon owners might have seen this as the event taking the decision he couldn’t. But worries were all that filled his heart.
He lived in a city, which environment could be tougher for a baby dragon than nature. The hatchling was panicked at the sight of one human, so what will it be with dozens of them? Plus, there were many dangers she wasn’t prepared to avoid, like cars, urban creatures, or simply human cruelty! Lyn was terrified too, and this was understandable! Her baby had run away, and he couldn’t even tell her reassuring words, like Trinara would get back home safe and sound!
This was too much for him. He couldn’t stay still in this situation. The baby dragon was scared of him, but he had to protect her, against her will if he had to! He grabbed his coat and put his shoes, determined to do what needed to be done.
“What are you doing?” Lyn finally noticed him, crying.
“I’m not going to abandon her to the roughness of the city! I’m going to find her!” He replied, getting up, then looking at her. “I promise you, Lyn, I’m not returning until I found her. I’ll bring her back home. I don’t care she’s scared of me, I have to watch over her!
Not even waiting for the dragoness’ response, he opened the door and slammed it as he got out.
“Good luck… and thank you, my beloved owner…” She whispered timidly as he couldn’t hear her anymore.
The sun was going down, and the temperature was sweet. As little as it was, the young man took it as a good thing; the baby dragon wouldn’t freeze in a corner at least… But where had she gone? He had inspected the place under the window, but apart from her initial landing, Trinara hadn’t left imprints on the ground; she was still small and light.
Why did all these troubles happen to him?! He just wanted a happy life with the one he loved, but the life he chose would never give him a rest! What if destiny itself was tricking him, to punish him for his choices of life? Yet, he could never choose another, more regular life! He wanted to have his beloved dragoness by his side, and for this, he would take all the responsibilities that were packed with it!
Still, Trinara was such a scramble… He had surprised himself thinking that maybe, maybe the hatchling would be happier out there… But he had chased this thought right away; he couldn’t think such horrible things on Lyn’s child! Desperate for a track to follow, he let himself go for a call in the twilight.
“Trinara! Where are you!”
“You know, if the one you are looking for is running away from you, maybe giving it your location won’t help…” A voice talked nearby.
Curious about this strange resonating voice and furious to be talked to so calmly in such a crisis situation, Nick turned back, and had a jolt seeing what was behind him. The shape looked like a global human form, but there didn’t seem to have either clothes or flesh… actually, it was like it was made of pure light, contained in the shape. Only its eyes were visible.
“Who or what are you? I’m in a hurry right now! He couldn’t help but shouting.
“I know, but we have just the time to speak before I help you.”
“Help me? You know where my baby dragon went? Tell me right now!”
He tried to grab the shape by the collar to threaten it, but it was like trying to capture air with bare hand. It wasn’t material.
“I just want to make sure you make the right choice first.” The shape simply spoke calmly once again. “This baby dragon ran away, that’s a fact. But it’s also a fact that it’s complicating your life, and that a part of you wanted it to happen.”
“If you want to do philosophy with me, this is no time for that!” He groaned a he got back to the grass to find clues. “You want me to say I had terrible thoughts and wished that Trinara could disappear? Fine! I say it! But if I’m here, that’s because these were nothing but bad moments I want to forget and because the safety of a baby is more important to me than my own comfort!”
“Is it? Or don’t you think you only want to make your dragoness happy so she wouldn’t blame you? Aren’t you considering this hatchling as a little pain to endure everyday in order to enjoy the presence of your companion?”
He stayed mute against such words. Not because he was getting scolded by what was likely to be a hallucination… not because this hallucination seemed to know things on his private life… But because… What it said was likely to be the truth…
“It’s noble to want to make you beloved one happy.” The shape told him with accusing eyes. “But keep in mind that the one you want to use for that… is a living being too. A child, what’s more. Children feel when they aren’t loved for good reasons. Tell me, do you really want to keep a child locked with its mother and unloved just so you can be happy?”
Nick lowered his eyes, feeling a bit guilty… This was true, and what he suddenly realized about himself deeply disgusted him. No, this wasn’t him. He wasn’t like that! He didn’t want to manipulate anyone for his own happiness!
“No… This is not what I want…” He let out between his clenched teeth, also turning his hands into raging and shaking fists.
“Then wouldn’t it be better to let this child go and find its own happiness? If you really love your companion, isn’t it better to do whatever is the best for her baby, even if it means being blamed for that? Can you make a choice between your happiness and the best to be done?”
“I don’t want to choose!” He screamed, punching the ‘face’ of the shape, and obviously going through without resistance. “I don’t care if that makes me the actual monster who keeps her locked in, I don’t care if that means I’ll be hated in return! I’m taking her back, because this is no environment she could survive in and that I prefer being a bad man over abandoning her to a horrible fate!”
The eyes of the shape switch from accusing to challenging.
“Do you really think you could do your best everyday for the rest of your life for a being that will hate and fear you?”
“For the rest of my life, and even after if I need to! Whether I wanted it or not, this is the life I chose and both Lyn and Trinara are my family! I’d sacrifice anything for them, even my own comfort! Because knowing they are safe and happy is the only thing that will ever matter to me and make me truly happy!”
Nick panted. He had yelled his words against the ghost of light, not even caring if neighbors had heard him or not. He knew what he wanted now! He wanted to protect his family, whatever the cost! He knew his bad thoughts were only moments of doubt!
A bit curious about the shape’s reaction to that, he watched it raise an ‘arm’, pointing to the corner of the street.
“This way. At the corner, go straight forward and turn at the third street on your right. This is where you’ll find her.”
He stared at it for a second. It was… telling him where to look for Trinara? But… could he trust it? How could a hallucination know about it? And if it wasn’t, how could he guess if it was the truth or… lies from a mysterious being who didn’t want him to find the hatchling?
“You better run…” It spoke in a serious tone. “Anyway, you have no other track to follow. And you should hurry, death is already upon her.”
Nick dropped his jaw in horror, and started to run toward the corner of the street. If it was right, he would never forgive himself for not making it in time!
While his lungs started to burn, he focused on his rage to ignore the pain of his crazy race. Why did this being hold him back for so long if she was in danger?! Why had it let him choose if the stake was a baby’s life? He could never express how outraged and angry he was!
He was already half way to the new street corner he aimed at. No matter the cost, he would bring Trinara back home safe and sound!
“I’m coming Trinara!” He whispered for himself. “You better hold on until I arrive!”
Trinara sighed… Night had almost fallen now, and she was lost. She had hoped to find a shelter, or at least a safe tree to climb. But all around, there was nothing but human constructions… She was walking on this horribly hard ground, without knowing where to go…
She felt so lonely… Her mother was everything she had in the world, and leaving her tore her heart apart. But this was for the best; that was what she repeated in her head so sadness and despair wouldn’t overwhelm her mind. She had to be strong! She was still in danger, and she had to find the exit of this human territory! Once she will find a forest, she could find other dragons so she could get support.
She raised her head and found herself stopped by a huge stone wall. She had gone the wrong way. She turned to get back on her steps, in hope to find a better path, but she froze when she saw three shapes blocking the exit.
In fear, she saw the three humans staring at her, a devious smile on their mouth.
