lol not at all. I'm not saying it's a bad show, or an non-enjoyable show, but I watch the new episodes on netflix when they come out so that I can study what the appeal is in the demographic that was developed based around it. Basically, I watch it to try and find out why they like it, and I have sociological theories based around it as well.
The show appeals to an age area of men during the time of their development that they feel most vulnerable which is the point when the boy is turning into a man, that transition can be both confusing and difficult to mentally manage as old rules of life become obsolete and new rules are forced into place. MLP provides a more simple point of view for this transition, a land where things aren't complicated. Good people are good, evil people are evil and it's easy to determine who is who. The land is ruled over by a near-divine mother figure that not only shows interest in the development of those around her, but participates in it under a number of occasions. The show takes place among 6 individuals that quickly learn to befriend one another, showing uncanny acceptance to a group of people that are seeking such acceptance within their own life as they're adult personalities start to build to allow them to fit within the grooves of society. Not only are these people very accepting to anyone that comes their way as long as the person doesn't announce herself as being evil, but there is very little internal struggle among them. Anytime one has an issue with another it's quickly resolved and never brought up again, a fantasy where problems along a social level are relatively ignored after resolution which is something else many developing young adults seek. Also anytime a character is mentioned that character then is shown doing something amazing based on their character clearly establishing that these individuals are infact amazing and that those at home should want to be friends with them. That's where spike comes in, he's the most deceptive part of the show. A side character that usually adds little if nothing to the plot of the day, but does provide exposition as to how the people at home should be reacting to the main characters. Example, all of the character outlines are the same, but we consider Rarity to be more beautiful than the rest based on her main, and the fact that Spike tells us she's beautiful. We see Rainbow Dash as being an "awesome dudette" not because she does awesome things all the time, personally I find kicking clouds to be kind of dull, but Spike informs us that such a feat is impressive so we're impressed. Twilight is considered smarter than the rest. Does she usually express herself as being smarter or figure things out more than the others? No, usually they're telling her what's going on and how to figure things out, but we consider her to be smarter because Spike considers her to be smarter. See how that works?
