And I caughts teh stupids.
Seriously, I've been getting some odd hits in some places for people that want to hire me for art lately. Some refuse to give me any information whatsoever on what they want me to draw, wasting my time. I'm willing to fill in some details on an image, but I at least need to know something about what I'm wanted to draw! If you're gonna pay me I wanna get it right the first time because, I'm spending MY time on the image, no one else's, and I'm using MY art materials to do it. Money out of my pocket for every single thing I put on paper.
It's my life I'm spending to make that image you want when you ask me for something. If it's a gift, I don't care, as long as it doesn't take umpteen attempts to get it right. If I'm being paid and I'm wasting materials, then I'm going to need to up the price, which is already lower than I should be charging. A gift is something you're willing to spend a bunch of time and money on, a commission/job isn't unless you're going for quality on a point of pride.
Essentially, this image shows how I feel when I need to pull teeth to get information on a commission piece. The more detailed description of what's wanted that I get, the faster completed and better quality the image is. I'll only get upset if you're telling me a life story when I ask if there's scars or anything. All I need is a description, or a piece of reference material and away I'll go.
A sign of why I get upset over these details is this image. It takes up almost the full height of an 9" X 12" piece of series 400 strathmore smooth drawing paper, and it took me only 30 minutes to draw and ink... I work fast! I like getting things done! I like having jobs completed! I can get a job on Sunday and have it inked and in the mail within three days. Unless there's a family emergency or something I'll get it done as quickly and as nicely as I can.
I've got some good customers right now, but I have others asking me for stuff that fall into the irritating category.
If you hire an artist to make something for you, tell them every aspect of what you want, it makes it easier for all concerned and makes the art stay cheaper because materials don't get wasted.
On another note, gift/request equals free art, commission equals $$$.
